16“ Armed Forces vinyl – info needed!

Wed Mar 15, 2006 12:34 am

Hi to all of you!

I was told by a friend that 16” (sixteen) vinyl records exist with Elvis songs on them.

They are made for/by “Armed Forces Radio & Television Service”. I knew about some 12”

records they released, but I was never aware of any 16” records.

Does anyone of you have more information on those, or even better, does anyone know

where to get such an album ?

The Library Of Congress web site has details of Elvis Armed Forces records.

every so often rarities like that show up for sale.

I've got a few of them in my collection (probably all that are made) 8)

Some have 2 Elvis songs, others have 1 side Elvis and a few (I think 2) are all Elvis. When I'm back home I can send you a list with what I have.
They are all released in the 50s, the oldest one I have is from October 1956, the latest is from 1958.

These albums are very rare and I doubt you'll ever find one on Ebay. The only one on Ebay (I'm aware of) has been sold/offered in 2002.
And I'm always looking for this kind of stuff. (call me nuts)
If you want one of these records, we could work something out.

Do you have a link for me?

I told my wife, when I find one of those 16" records and call one of them my own, I'm ready to die.

that's a lot you have. What are the labels like, can you give me more information about the labels. I would like to have one of them.

Sun Mar 19, 2006 4:11 pm

The labels all look the same, except for the christmas album which has a special "christmas" label.
The label shown below comes from LPM-1382's big brother

looks great.
do you know how many 16 " they are complete made and how the cover looks like ?

Sun Mar 19, 2006 10:24 pm

No covers were made for these records, they came in a plain brown sleeve.

I have no idea about the quantities they were made in (anybody ???), what I do know is that every base worldwide got a copy of them.
If a base was closed all records had to be destroyed and sometimes soldiers were allowed to shoot these records to pieces for a dime.

The records I have come from Frankfurt, meaning that Elvis listened to these records when he heard himself on the radio. :smt020 :smt023

Sun Mar 19, 2006 11:49 pm

how do we come together, I would like to have one of those rare records ?

Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:31 pm

Choose one you like and PM me.

Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:45 pm

What speed are those records? 16, 33 1/3 , 45, 78....

Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:54 pm

I can only guess they play at 33 1/3 Rpm because I don't own a player that can play 16" records.
I have one framed and it's great to see the reactions of collectors who never were aware these "biggies" excist. Let alone one with Elvis songs on it.

Mon Mar 20, 2006 11:08 pm

Thanks for info!

Wed Mar 22, 2006 8:29 pm

Thu Mar 23, 2006 10:57 pm

Fri Mar 24, 2006 2:15 am

Sun Apr 02, 2006 11:02 am

it took a bit time, but my wife said ok. So she get a pair of new shoes and I my 16 ".
how we come together now ?

Sun Apr 02, 2006 1:43 pm

What are those records worth? If there are just a few of them , they must be worth quite some money don't they?
That label looks great!

Mon Apr 03, 2006 10:53 am

I am sure these guys can figure out themselves what the seller wants for it and the buyer is willing to pay.
How much do a pair of ladies' shoes cost?

Mon Apr 03, 2006 11:26 am

Correct Luuk!

They can PM me (like I offered before) and we can arrange something.
But I'm not keen on repeating this again and again.

BTW Do you still have that recording of Orion at the Rockhouse meeting in Eindhoven? I would love to have it on CD, those meetings were great!
I never saw any footage, did you?

Yes, I still have that recording plus interviews on reel-to-reel tape somewhere. The show was not filmed, as far as I remember.
The text of the interview was typed out in Johan Giezen's fanclub magazine "Elvisions" at the time.
