Elvis '56 - Again !

At No.2 in the Woolworth's Music Video Chart: Elvis '56 !

The original 1987 VHS version first appeared on DVD in 2002 when it was missing the Hy Gardner interview.

Then in 2004 it was re-released with My Way replacing An American Trilogy, for some reason.

This is a re-release of the 2004 My Way version, but at a nice cheap price [£5.97].

Everything is in sharper detail compared with the VHS version, but the old Dorsey and Sullivan tv excerpts look better on VHS !

On this DVD, the contrast seems too harsh, it's all stark black and white, with few shades of grey !

On the VHS, this old footage has a 'warmer' more natural look.

The few colour bits are better on VHS, with the DVD lending a pinky look to the yellows !

I wasn't sure which was 'correct' until they showed some Sun singles on which the labels were the right shade of yellow on VHS, but decidedly pink on the DVD !

The re-release also sports a nice, sharp, b & w pic from the 2nd Milton Berle tv show on the front cover.

It would be more appealing that way. Maybe Sillerman has this in his plan too.
There's that great opening bit on Elvis '56 where he's doing Blue Suede Shoes from Dorsey's 17th March show and it suddenly bursts into colour near the end !

I would welcome all the 50's tv footage in colour !

To be fair, they have spruced the footage up on Elvis '56 but they need to do this on all of it.

Ugh.

I do, however, like the idea of that DVD of all the E1 & E2 hits that a European outlet/ fan put together, using clips and montages. They really should be using those clips creatively.

A good idea. If Sillerman could do that it would be interesting.

All Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle TV shows in color.

Colorization looks more dated than the original black and white and many shades of grey! By coloring it brings attention to itself. Imo.
