I think it is balling as in slang for dancing.

Going balling 'til half past 3.

Rockin' and reelin' we'll get that feelin'
.

It could be constrewed to mean anything, but I think it's dancing.

I love the in-between take banter with Elvis and charlie Hodge. Elvis totally cracks up. Great stuff!

Colin,

I do believe that when he says "cannonball" he is referring someone that "knocks him out". A cannonball would do damage.

As for Heartbreak Hotel...that was a silly example.

Yes I do believe he was saying "balling", what the hell else could it be. Bowling...yeah right.

But if I remember correctly, back in the 50s "balling" meant dancing.

Well, yeah, wot about Ballin' the Jack ?

The Little Richard song was "Rip It Up."

"I'm gonna rip it up, and ball tonight."

According to Little Richard--he meant dancing.

What about the Lawdy Miss Clawdy Lyric?

"You like to ball ever morning. Don't come home till late at night"

Whatever balling is, I'm guessing he's referring to the same thing in Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Down In the Alley. I never thought it was bowling or dancing, but maybe I have a dirty mind :)
