Compilation of Elvis' best live performances in existence

Wed Jun 25, 2003 5:37 am

Being slightly bored this evening I thought I would ask you folks what you
thought might be the penultimate Elvis live compilation.
Criteria is maximum of 75 minute show using any known (must be existing)
live performance by the man himself between and including the years 1969 and 1977
(soundboard, audience recording, BMG release... doesn't matter).
One other thing, it should follow the flow of a "standard" Elvis Presley Show.
Give it a whirl if you have a few minutes to kill.
Here's a sample (I'll add a more complete list once I've had some time to give it more thought):

All Shook Up (Vegas February 1970)
Burning Love (Greensboro April 1972)
I Got A Woman / Amen (Hampton Roads April 1972)
Love Me (Memphis March 1974)
Fairytale (Vegas August 1975)
Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Vegas February 1970)
You Gave Me A Mountain (Hawaii January 1973)
Polk Salad Annie (Houston March 1970)
Don't Be Cruel (Vegas August 1970)
... and so on...

You get the idea. Give it a try... humour me!!!
And... Have a pleasant day!!!
:D :D :D :D :D :D

I don't play "Aloha" that often, and I forget just how wonderful "Welcome to my world" is. Thanks for the reminder!

When the list is complete I may just make up the definitive CD one afternoon.

Priority has been given to what I would consider good performances that are also available in comparable sound quality, so that the performances would mix together well on a CD release. The two exceptions here are the “Behind Closed Doors” performances of “I Got A Woman” and “Suspicious Minds” but I have included these in my list, as they are such good performances. If I were to burn this disc for my own personal use, I might consider replacing these with two officially released versions of the same songs, due to the sound quality issue.

I have included a few oldies so that the show bears some resemblance to an actual Elvis Presley concert, and have sequenced the tracks out of chronological order for the same reason. I should also add that it was never my intention to ignore any performances post 1974, and my original list included tracks spanning the years 1969 – 1977, but when I had to start cutting the list down, these were the choices I couldn’t do without:

See See Rider (February 18, 1970 – “On Stage, February, 1970”)
I Got A Woman (August 22, 1969 – “Behind Closed Doors”)*
In The Ghetto (August 26, 1969 – “Elvis Aron Presley”)
Hound Dog (August 12, 1970 - “TTWII SE”)
Never Been To Spain (February 16, 1972 – “Burning Love”)
Proud Mary (February 16, 1970 – “On Stage, February, 1970)
You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ (August 12, 1970 - “TTWII SE”)
Walk A Mile In My Shoes (February 19, 1970 – “On Stage, February, 1970)
I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry (January 14, 1973 – “Aloha From Hawaii”)
You Gave Me A Mountain (February 16, 1972 – “Burning Love”)
Steamroller Blues (March 20, 1974 – “Platinum – A Life In Music”)
I’ll Remember You (June 10, 1972 – “An Afternoon In The Garden”)
Polk Salad Annie (February 18, 1970 – “On Stage, February, 1970”)
Bridge Over Troubled Water (August 12, 1970 - “TTWII SE”)
Burning Love (January 14, 1973 – “Aloha From Hawaii”)
Are You Lonesome Tonight (August 24, 1969 – “Elvis In Person”)
One Night (August 12, 1970 - “TTWII SE”)
All Shook Up (August 24, 1969 – “Elvis In Person”)
It’s Over (February 17, 1972 – “Burning Love”)
My Way (January 14, 1973 – “Aloha From Hawaii”)
Reconsider Baby (August 23, 1969 – “Collectors Gold”)
An American Trilogy (February, 1972 – “Elvis Aron Presley”)
Mystery Train/Tiger Man (August 22, 1969 – “Collectors Gold”)
How Great Thou Art (March 20, 1974 – “Live On Stage In Memphis”)
A Big Hunk O’ Love (February 16, 1972 – “Burning Love”)
Suspicious Minds (February 16, 1970 – “Behind Closed Doors”)*
Can’t Help Falling In Love (August 24, 1969 – “Elvis In Person”)

* = I’m not sure whether these dates are correct.

I decided to burn my disc, after making some alterations to the track-listing as I had chosen far too much material for one disc. The final cover art, and the revised track listing are here under the link: “Legendary Live Performances”:

Thanks for posting that rockinrebel!
Do you mind if I make my own copy using your list?
Some really great cuts on there!

All Shook Up?

Tue Jul 01, 2003 6:06 pm

Is there a version of this All Shook Up from 1970 available on an official release, or on import in good sound? I know I've heard it in mediocre sound on one of the 1970 live imports and it is awesome, but if I make a comp. like this I'd like to keep the sound consistent.

Great list, R.R. It will heavily influence my own when I make one.

BIA

The only soundboard version I know of is from
"True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" import Cupido CR 9501
Unfortunately, the sound quality isn't very good.

Brad,

Feel free to use the track-listing. I always publish the covers on my site for those that wish to burn their own discs, and it was your idea in the first place.

BIA,

If you are looking for the January/February 1970 versions that Elvis performed as the show opener, there are only soundboard recordings available on the boot CD’s “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” and “True Love Travels On A Gravel Road”.

Live August 1970 versions when the song was performed mid-show are available from the multi track tapes on TTWII S.E. (disc two) and the FTD release “The Way It Was”.

There is one other version available of All shook up as starting number from this Vegas season.

On "Walk a Mile in my Shoes" (the second release of Fort Baxter) the first half of Elvis opening night show of January 26, 1970 has been released.

This show, of course, contained "All shook up" as an opening number. The overall sound is also better than on TTOAGR...

Pretty darn good list, elvis-fan! I especially like the nomination of the August 1970 version of Don't Be Cruel, this one really rocks! But hey, how can you dare ;) to mention the Aloha version of Johnny B. Goode? Ever heard the 1969 version on In Person?? ;) This is hard rock!

I also think that Trilogy and especially Big Hunk have been done way better in Feb. 1972 (Burning Love album) than on the Aloha show. But that's just a matter of personal taste, I guess. Also no Can't Help Fallin In Love beats the August 12th 1970 MS version featured on TTWII SE Disc 2 IMO.

Now, what do you say? :)

Great thread guys. Myself there's so many outstanding performances I don't know where to start.

Wed Jul 02, 2003 3:10 am

Hi See-See!
Thanks for the feedback!
As far as the Aloha version of JBG, I have always loved JB's lead in this version...
the '69 renditions are great but the guitar lead in '73 is hard to beat for my money.
The other two, I agree, are just personal preference.

Wed Jul 02, 2003 3:23 am

Any greatest live list would have to include Bridge Over Troubled ater from June 26, 1977 and Where No One Stands Alone from February of that year, and any number of Unchained Melodys from the same year. Emotional input to music does not come any better.

Hi Rick!

I agree that "Where No One Stands Alone" is a nice cut and a stand-out from February 1977.
But by 1977, Elvis could no longer do the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" justice.
I have heard both versions from "Spring Tour 77" and the Indianapolis show.
They are a far cry from 1970 and even 1972/73 which, in my opinion, was the last time Elvis performed a credible version of this song (JMO).

Wed Jul 02, 2003 6:44 pm

The version of “Bridge” on the Spring Tours” CD is indeed very weak, and certainly not worthy of a place on a compilation of the very best live performances. The version Elvis performed on June 26, 1977 does sound considerably stronger than the “Spring Tours” version, but I still don’t think he ever performed the song better than he did in August 1970, and that’s the version I would use. Both “Bridge” and “Unchained Melody” were considered for the list I made, and it was a very close call whether or not to include Elvis’ August ’70 version of “Bridge”. It is an essential live performance, but to keep this idea within the single CD format, glaring omissions are unavoidable.

I think “Where No One Stands Alone” is a nice impromptu performance that Elvis sings both powerfully and emotionally, but personally I don’t think it fits into the essential category.
