It is heartening to see the idea of an Elvis Presley Airport resurface quite independent of yours truly, who got the story into the, "Memphis Business Journal" and newspapers worldwide a couple of years ago. The new story is on ElvisNews.
Michel Van der Sommen's meeting with the "Elvis Social Club" last night in Dublin Ireland, was a great success. He was kept busy signing autographs for people and he was asked to speak about HIS, "Elvis At 13", statue in Tupelo:-) Michiel also was interviewed on Anna Livia radio, Dublin.
Tue Jun 24, 2003 12:26 pm
Just returned from Dublin Airport, Michiel is on his way to the Netherlands. What a week!!!
WHOOPEE! Looks like we are flying again:-)

All Elvis fans should vote for the Elvis Presley Airport-I know a few here wont, but you just can't please everyone-even Elvis himself couldn't
Two years ago Elvis got 30% of the Poll now he is at 60% C'mon guys let's Rock!

E-mail all the Memphis authorities and the Tennessee Governor. Also newspapers radio and TV. Elvis fans deserve this after all their hardwork.
Memphis radio Poll has Elvis in the lead-VOTE now

Many fans are, as I type, busy writing letters and e-mailing the Memphis authorities. For myself, I think the media will have to shame them into acting:-)

The Memphis newspaper's, "Elvis Presley International Airport",Memphis story is in, "USA TODAY".
International coverage again!

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it's going to happen "anytime soon" if at all.
Elvis as destination not expected anytime soon
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Adding a famous entertainer's name to an airport is nothing new.
New Orleans' airport is named for Louis Armstrong; England has Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Travelers flying to Orange County, Calif., land at John Wayne Airport. So why not Elvis Presley Memphis International Airport?
"That's how I think of it anyway," said Rima Snyder, a visitor from Petaluma, Calif., waiting for a flight at Memphis International Airport. "You see Elvis stuff in all the gift stores. I think that would be fine with me."
It wouldn't be the first name change for Memphis, which was known as Memphis Metropolitan Airport before adopting its current name in 1969. The airport's terminal is named after entertainer Danny Thomas, who founded St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The process would be simple, said Larry Cox, president of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, but he does not like the idea. His board would have to approve the change.
"I don't think any airport should be anything other than the name of the community it serves," he said. "I just don't think there's going to be any serious chance of it."
Kevin Kane head of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau agrees.
"I don't know if it would ever fly," he said. "If I sound like I'm waffling, it's because I think: Who's going to carry that torch to make it happen?"

At last a bite!
elvis-fan, The "Elvis At 13" Statue took awhile too:-) I'm patient.
Don't believe everything you read in the press about Elvis and his fans and their plans:-)
A free lance journalist from a University here in Dublin just contacted me on the guest book of
he wants to do a newspaper article about the Elvis Presley International Airport - he saw the USA TODAY story.

The big problem with renaming the Memphis International Airport, is the objections from businesses.
As "Elvis Presley" is an actual trade name, owned by Graceland Enterprises; you can understand the likes of "Fed Ex" or "McDonalds" wanting it renamed after them!
It would be free advertising for Graceland. I'm sure they are backing the campaign.
I'm all for it. But I'm an Elvis fan.
You can understand the objections from the various Memphis businesses.
Thu Jun 26, 2003 7:33 am
Getlo, yes I agree FedEx and Macdonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and other businessess, might like to have the Airport as an advert for their services or products.
This info was taken into consideration before I embarked on the Elvis Airport Campaign. Just as I researched the Elvis statue project before committing myself to a lot of time and expense.
A lesson can be learnt here. Many of you are far younger and more up to date than I. To become a small part of the Elvis Presley story just think for a while on an obvious oversight in the Elvis legend and go for it! I have a few more ideas worth putting to the test.
Whether or not the Elvis Airport project works out, just think of all the publicity it has generated so far:-)
An example http://www.elvispresleynews.com/images/AIRPORT3.jpg
the same newspaper may cover the story next Sunday!
Thu Jun 26, 2003 3:39 pm
Emma Macnamee, a reporter from the, "News of the World", just rang for a few quotes about the latest media interest in the Elvis airport Campagn.
My reporter friend, Nick Bramhill, on that newspaper, has been an invaluable asset. The reporting of our Elvis stories in that particular newspaper began in 1997 and have not ceased since! See the 2001 version http://www.elvispresleynews.com/images/AIRPORT3.jpg
The British edition of the paper sells 4.5 million copies each Sunday. Yes, we were in it. Because of the 20th Anniversary 1997.

As long as you are getting our man a mention, in a positive light - I'm all for it.
There's no stopping you Maurice (and some on here might want to!
) but I say... carry on.
Your mentions in the media can only do some good.
Well done and ten out of ten for your efforts.
Thu Jun 26, 2003 11:47 pm
I do not think he has any enemies on this board except DJC. This is simply due to the fact that Maurice has a stronger grasp on the kings language than does our local Doc. Couple that with Doc's Little Man Syndrome
this just will not do.
Perhaps now that I have diagnosed DJC we can see about getting him some treatment and he can live up to his full potential as a scholar.
I crack myself up sometimes

Is Johnny Carpenter vertically challenged??.........if so thats feccing hilarious........ he must be a distant relative of Nighthawk's.....he's a shortarse too-lol.
No wonder Doc keeps making a bit of a Charlie (Hodge) of himself then.
In Nighthawks hometown there's a traditional contest they have every year.... it's a dwarf throwing competition- you interested Doc?? lol
I promise i wont throw you too far Doc...hehe
Fri Jun 27, 2003 9:27 am
THANKS getlo, blue-gypsy.
Nuts for you squirrel:-) Lets keep to the topic.
Much as I enjoy playing with the Doc I have found the best medicine is just hearing Elvis sing at his best.
This thread has been quite slow in starting, but beginning to Take Off now, fasten your seat belts we may get some turbulence.
Will the world shame Memphis into doing the Right thing? LISALAND indeed:-)
Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:12 am
Lighten up Maurice....we're only having a bit of fun!!!
Let you hair down man!!! (if you've got any) LOL
Fri Jun 27, 2003 12:37 pm
I was kidding you Squirrel, dont fall out of the tree:-)
Yep I still have most of my hair but some strands have deserted:-(
Just playing Giant Gene's Philly radio Show on CD -THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY special .
He mentions Maureen and yours truly. So There! LOL.
Fri Jun 27, 2003 12:42 pm
The Doc may well be vertically challenged, who knows?
Tirelessly campaigning for Elvis is a good thing, carry on the good work...however, it won't make your penis any larger.
Fri Jun 27, 2003 1:28 pm
Fri Jun 27, 2003 1:40 pm
Maurice, It is good what you are doing. Having Elvis' name brought to the attention of so many for Various reasons, is only benificial in the long run.
Good luck and keep up the good work
Fri Jun 27, 2003 4:36 pm
Tupelo_boy, the early 1950s Manchester smog would shrink anything!
Thanks sam. A man has got to do what boys can't:-)
Michiel can do you in bronze, resin, or terracotta. His 26 minute talk on sculpture went out on Glen Lee's Friday Elvis show (3 hours) Beaumont radio Dublin, this morning at 11.10am
Sat Jun 28, 2003 9:22 am
See the great Poll on, "The Commercial Appeal", newspaper of Memphis website
http://www.gomemphis.com/mca/local_news ... 85,00.html
Elvis Airport gets 76.8%!
Only 30% in 2001, Times they are a chagin'
Gaining altitude with the right attitude:-)
Sat Jun 28, 2003 10:23 am
caronlm, I did suggest "The King Airport" in my original conversation with Scott Shepard of the "Memphis Business Journal" July 2001.
Anticipation is often required when dealing with the unimaginitive.
The vast majority of Elvis fans favour the Elvis Airport , nevertheless minority oppinions have there place.
The newspaper on the link is to do the Elvis Airport story tomorrow-Sub editor permitting.
You'll smile if it comes about, trust me:-)
Sat Jun 28, 2003 2:13 pm
Carolyn, can you buy tons of Kingsford Smith stuff at that airport, like you can purchase Elvis Presley stuff at Memphis Airport-things are indeed relative young lady:-)
To tell you the truth I don't care Too Much what they call Memphis Airport as long as my Campaign continues to produce a massive amount of publicity for Elvis as it did in 2001.
Sat Jun 28, 2003 3:50 pm
Carolyn, Kissing the Blarney stone has worked wonders for me:-)
A lady owner of a pub was rushing my last pint in a pub in Wales UK. She wanted to close the place. I said to her, "Arent you a beautiful woman?"
2 hours later my companions and I were still in the "Closed Pub"!
Yes, methinks I'll get the Elvis Airport:-) http://www.elvispresleynews.com/images/AIRPORT3.jpg
