ULTIMATE versions of live songs

Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:17 pm

i'm trying to compile a cd or two with all the best versions of songs from both bootleg soundboards and officially released live songs
i noticed a thread earlier where you were supposed to list your top 5 live shows on cd.
if comparing song versions instead of show to show, what songs and from what release is THE best versions?

like big hunk o love from opening night 72 is the best version i have heard
so any input like that would be greatly appreciated

elviscollect:

Here are a few suggestions from me. Remember "best live version" is often subjective, so you're still gonna have to make up your own mind.

In no particular order:

Trying to Get to You - Rapid City 21 June 1977. Found on Elvis in Concert and the Silver Box Set (Elvis Aron Presley) CDs

Mystery Train / Tiger Man - my fave version is the Shreveport 7 June 1975 version also found on the Silver Box set

How Great Thou Art - Omaha 19 June 1977 - found on Elvis in Concert. A stunning version from an otherwise poor show

What'd I Say - Las Vegas 23 August 1969 MS - I first heard this on The Sound of Your Cry LP in 1981 but I believe it was subsequently released on Collector's Gold

An American Trilogy - 9 April 1972 Hampton. This (I think) was the version first released on This is Elvis in 1981. As far as I know it has never been released on CD, although I think there is a possibility it was released on Presley: The All Time Greatest Hits (1987) in error.

Actually I'm probably not being much help so I'll stop there.

How Great Thou Art - i'd have to say that the version on Just Pretend from Dec 75 is unbeatable. Omaha is ok - it's the best performance in an otherwise poor show, but the reprise in the Just Pretend version is mind - and speaker - blowing!

How about the San Antonio version of Proud Mary - I reckon that one is hard to beat.

Never Been To Spain - the Feb 72 mix on the 70's box set is fabulous - James' guitar work sounds wonderful.

See See Rider - the Hampton 72 version rocks, and the band sound great.

Just Pretend - Aug 70 versions - any of these versions are wonderful.

An Americal Trilogy - I think Elvis really nailed it in Greensboro - a wonderful version.

Finally, how about something like Johnny Be Goode from 69 - the original version featured on In Person is absolutely fabulous, or the version from On Tour.

The Wonder Of You - August 13th, 1970 DS

American Trilogy - January 14th, 1973

Sweet Caroline - August 12th, 1970 MS

Lawdy Miss Clawdy - April 09th, 1972 ES

Some versions that came to my mind now.

Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:53 pm

Burning Love (CD "Just Pretend")
Just Pretend (CD "Just Pretend)
My Boy (CD "Dixiland Rocks")
Bridge Over Troubled Water (CD "The Greensboro Concert")
Lawdy Miss Clawdy (CD "The Hampton Roads Concert")
Help Me Make It Through The Night (CD "Just Pretend)
I've Lost You (CD "That's The Way It Is")
I'll Remember You (CD "Aloha From Hawaii")
An American Trilogy (CD "Aloha From Hawaii")
A Big Hunk O' Love (CD "The Hampton Concert")
Trying To Get To You "(CD "Elvis In Concert")
Fairytale (CD "Big Boss Man")

The mentioned songs are just a few of my favorites. To my ears the most songs improved, when Elvis sang them live. He was such a great concert performer!

Apart from maybe the one where he does a mock laugh after the "it's funny how..." line. I sure wish he hadn't done that!

Yeah. Talk about weird sense of humour. I wish he'd never used that "shove it up your nose" line in "Suspicious Minds" either. It totally ruins the whole song!

I know what you're saying, but Elvis sense of humour is one of the things I admire, and it'd have been very dull work performing a month in Vegas without being able to crack a joke.

He used the same mock laugh in Funny How Time Slips Away too. To me, it doesn't really detract from any performance, including Just Pretend.

Elviscollect, there was also a recent thread on creating a 'best of Elvis live' album that has discussion on favorite live tracks:
http://www.elvis-collectors.com/forum/v ... hp?t=19271

Welcome to the board. :)

Completely agree. I love Elvis's jokes and quips but I do wish he'd kept them to in-between songs when he was performing live. I'm fine with the jokey versions in rehearsals, but how many versions of Suspicious Minds were cheapened by those gags?

i guess a list of songs would help jogg peoples memory a bit

all shook up

cant help falling in love
crying in the chapel

help me make it through the night
hound dog
how great thou art
hurt
i cant stop loving you
i just cant help believing
i got a woman
if you love me
if you talk in your sleep
im leavin
im so lonesome i could cry
impossible dream
in the ghetto
its impossible
its midnight
its now or never
its over
ive lost you
jailhouse rock
just pretend
kentucky rain
lawdy miss clawdy
let it be me
let me be there
little sister
little darling
long tall sally
love letters

make the world go away
memories
moody blue
my baby left me
my boy
my way
mystery train
never been to spain
next step is love
one night
patch it up
polk salad annie
promised land
reconsider beby
release me
return to sender
rip it up
rubberneckin
runaway
see see rider
snowbird
softly as i leave you
something
spanish eyes
steamroller blues
stranger in the crowd
suspicious minds
sweet caroline
teddy bear
thats all right
there goes my everything
tiger man
trying to get to you
t-r-o-u-b-l-e
twenty days and twenty nights
until its time to go
ubchained melody
walk a mile in my shoes
welcome to my world
whatd i say
what now my love
when my blue moon turns to gold
when the snow is on the roses
why me lord

wooden heart
words
