Listen folks...

It's all music. Wether you like it or understand it or not. R Kelly may be a deviant, but then again, we're all deviant to some degree, depending on who's eyes you're looking through. An artist's personal life is separate from their music. To slam R Kelly's music for his personal activities is like slamming Elvis' music because of his drug use. Or Hendrix. What about Pete Townsend and his kiddie porn? Where does it end?

Music is art and art is to be interpreted...let R Kelly do what he will with the song. I don't care if he likes to hump water buffalo. It might get Elvis some validation in the hip hop community. And I think it's clear enough that Elvis was not a racist, that there should be little if any controversy at all about that.

Also, regarding Elvis and young girls...remember these are older values of the south...girls were often married with kids at 14 back then.

You're right, axeman, Music IS art, but if you don't think nonmusical factors contribute to people's perceptions of that art, I'd like to remind you of a troubled white girl named Michael Jackson.

this is the south. elvis' own father was 17 when he married.

and don't even get me started on jerry lee marrying myra, age 13, 2nd cousin twice removed--his 3rd marriage, without getting divorced from the 2nd.

priscilla wasn't close to being that messy. they MET when she was 14. but she didn't move in or see him again until she was 17!!! and they didn't get married until she was 22--that's past turning adult. therefore elvis waited a helluva long time. 17 with a boyfriend that's 27...it's really not too sick. 22 with 32...still not.

sorry. but, as a 17 year old girl--you are plenty old enough to know what you are doing. that's not kiddy age, therefore so not pedophilic, regardless if the age of consent is 18 (ooh, big deal, 1 year. last time i checked the age of reasonable 'i know what's going on' is early teens).

little info--one of my best friends got pregnant at 15 and had her daughter at 16--and she was the daughter of a teen pregnancy and got adopted. i had friends in rehab for sex addiction by 14. sick, yes. common, indeed.

people frequently used to be MARRIED by 17 and go straight into a dozen kids to work the farm. it happened in my family back in the day.

elvis living with a 17 year old is pedophilic behavior... no. and as far as cilla goes--you know i'd be begging my parents too. you'd have to be nuts not to. and elvis was a charmer. cilla was technically supposed to be living with vernon, though those arrangements quickly got dumped after awhile... and i'm pretty sure cilla wasn't arguing about the change of arrangements.

elvis didn't actually lose his virginity until roughly 1955, age 20 if you recall. and if we take cilla's word for it, she was 22 in 1967, and between 17 and 22 she only messed around a bit with nakedness and underwear videos or whatever.

even 17 is late by today's standards. and it was about marriage age back then.

think of it this way--think of what kids today are doing. it's really the same, just less glorified in the media back then.

suddenly, by today's standards a few underwear videos and catholic school girl outfits suddenly seems pretty tame.

and i certainly don't judge elvis as a pedophile even if cilla was 17, and i am pretty certain she had no complaints at her end. in fact she was more interested in having sex with elvis than elvis was with having sex with her. and she says 22, and she knows better than we do, even if we all wish we were flies on the ceiling--but we weren't.

What about her? Michael Jackson is a great performer. I don't care for a lot of his music, and he's a nutjob, but a great performer.

Hell, Van Gough cut off his ear. How unstable was he? It doesn't change how his art is viewed...does it?

Who, by the way, was great when we saw him last weekend at the Bridge Benefit concert...

Elvis' Babe, you post was very well-spoken.
