Wild rumor I heard today!

Fri Nov 04, 2005 1:48 am

As I was at the Shell getting gas, I heard a rumor on the radio about R Kelly wanting to do a remake of Elvis' #1 classic hit In The Ghetto with superstar rapper 50 Cent and hip hop diva Olivia.

According to the dj, R kelly is an Elvis fan and friends with Lisa Marie and even produced a lost track for her that never got released. He said that the remake would be in the image of a min-film video, similar to what Thriller was.

Kelly is from Chicago where the song takes place and it's his favorite Elvis song. This part got me. "Kelly also sampled Elvis' 70's hit Never Been To Spain on one of his past hit songs When A Woman's Fed Up." That's what the dj said, so run with it.

As for this supposed remake, I think it could be a positive and do wonders for Elvis' image as far as for the future of hip hop culture is concerned and the influence HH has on young America.

If I hear anything new or concrete on this rumor then I'll post it. I just thought this was interesting.

Hi Lakeisha!

Hmmm... such a remake could be both a positive and a negative thing...
Depending on how it's done!

As long as it don't get completely trashed (can't help but thinking of Pet Shop Boys' version of Always On My Mind...), I see nothing wrong in remaking Elvis songs.

Personally, I don't relish the idea of R. Kelly peeing all over an Elvis classic as if it were a 14-year-old girl.

Fri Nov 04, 2005 2:03 am

Given the history of R Kelly's troubled past, this is TERRIBLE news. I'm sorry, but I'm being honest....

umm i dont think hip hop fans r going to become elvis fans becasue of a remake. if people dont like the orginal music then they have plenty of other choices all be it sad ones as they are. reminds me of t-r-o-u-b-l-e to think travis trit got a hit with his version and people think of him instead of elvis. most dont even know that it was elvis song . . r kelly is also not who id wont to see doing an elvis song if anybody at all.

R Kelly never was found guilty nor was it ever proven that it was him on the tape. Now, after that being said, the tape was made at his residence, so hmmm.

I do think all the hype to such a project would put nothing but a positive spin on Elvis in the black hip hop community of him havin the balls to do a song back then about poor black folks tryin to survive in the hood. That song's lyrics are timeless and fit for any generation. Truly a masterpiece.

people don't you understand,
a child needs a helpin hand.
he'll grow to be an angry young man some day.
take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see, or do we simply turn our head and look the other way.....well the world turns

Agree with some of the others.

1. I don't think the song can be improved by Kelly.

2. I don't want someone who possessed & was indicted on dozens of counts of child-porn and was the subject of several lawsuits involving sex with underage girls associated in any way with Elvis or this song.

I love Elvis but wait a minute. You can't ignore the fact that Priscilla was only 14 when she began an intimate relationship with a 24 year old Elvis. No one really knows if they had sex or not before she was legal. Only him and her. And no, the mafia can't answer that either.

Plus Elvis was heavily known for dating much younger women in his life. Linda was young enough to be his own daughter when she was living with him. And what about Giner Alden whow as only 19 when he was 41? Yes legal but still young enough to have been his daughter.

I personally have nothing against either Elvis or R Kelly for what they did or didn't do. I just think it's wrong to point the finger at one and not the other for practically the same thing.

You're right. No one knows for sure except Elvis and Priscilla. However, since she has stated many times that she wanted to, but he would not and did not until they were married, we'll have to take her word for it.

Do not insult Elvis by comparing him to this guy because you are very wrong. It is not anywhere near the same thing as you mentioned.

Of course no one can improve Elvis' original. However, I do find an R. Kelly remake a positive for Elvis' image. It's an endorsement from an important African-American performer. And if this guy sampled "Never Been to Spain" (also a favorite of Kid Rock by the way), he's a fan. Like it or not, this kind of stuff kick starts debate and reassessment. A major key to the Bobby Darin revival in recent years was the public endorsement of celebrities like Johnny Depp, Neil Young and Kevin Spacey. It's true that stuff like this won't win Elvis the legions of young listeners out there but it might make some people reassess some music that they may have otherwise dismissed.

I didn't insult Elvis and never would! But it is similkar to R Kelly'ssituation. He was accused of having sex with a 15 year old girl in his home and videotaped it. BUT, the evidence was never proven nor was he ever found guilty. The trialwas settled and the girl who wason the tape was the niece of one of R Kelly's former girlfriend's who was a musician and wanted to get at him for personal reason's.

As for Elvis and Cilla. You have to give her the benifit of the doubt because it was her situation. But that doesn't mean she is telling the truth. She might be tryin to protect him. I should know this better than anyone. When I got pregnant by my boyfriend, I had to convince my mom that I loved him and for her not to press charges. I was 17 and under age and he was 21 and an adult. That is considered illegal in the state of Tennesee. But we kept it quiet and I protected him from ever being charged and going to jail. It was not statutory rape either. It was an agreement byt he both of us.

The reason I said that was because I don't want anyone to think my boyfriend is a pedophile. he's the love of my life.

It would be helpful if you could try to verify more of your statements before you post or give some sources for them.

Judge won't dismiss R. Kelly sex charges
10/30/2005

CHICAGO (AP) — Singer R. Kelly is a step closer to trial after a judge refused Friday to dismiss charges in a three-year old case against him for allegedly engaging in videotaped sex acts with an underage girl.

R. Kelly Continues 'Trapped in the Closet'
Nov 3, 2005
New York, Associated Press

...Kelly faces trial on three-year-old charges of child pornography stemming from allegations he videotaped sexual acts with a teenage girl. The singer has denied the allegations, and no trial date has been set...

Fri Nov 04, 2005 7:51 am

I don't think Elvis ever did or would piss on his teenage goddaughter and videotape it.

Need I make it plain? That's nasty.

Elvis' situation with Priscilla might not pass muster in this day and age, but I think even in a changed society people can tell the difference between their loving relationship and R. Kelly's pervy pee video.

I started to list a couple of dozen differences, but they should be obvious to all, so I won't waste anyone's time.

If Kelly sampled "Never Been to Spain" it was well hidden both inside the song and from the media (as it was a hit song that received lots of press). Let us know if you hear any indication of a sample in the song, I don't.

It may kick start debate, however a large percent of the message board posts I see about Kelly already include "and Elvis was a pedophile too, Elvis made porno with girls too". Seems to me a topic that doesn't need to be further 'kick started'.

I agree with elvissessions.

I haven´t never heard about this singer!

Fri Nov 04, 2005 1:28 pm

I don't think this is a good thing. Looking at the music of R Kelly and especially 50 Cents, they will emphsize the "ghetto" part as they usually do: sex, drugs, gangsta and violence. And gloryfying that.

This was not the intention of Elvis' version, he asked attention for the poor circumstances in the ghetto and what it could lead to.

Fri Nov 04, 2005 1:53 pm

Lakeisha, again, this isn´t really about Elvis is it? Would it be possible for you to discuss other artists and/or rumours about these and your personal things in the off topic forum? Thanks!

Sincerely MB280E

Fri Nov 04, 2005 3:22 pm

If it's a [b]wild rumor..then why are you spreading it??

Fri Nov 04, 2005 3:45 pm

What are the chances that this is just a rumour?

Why do RKelly, 50 Cent or any other rapper want to remix/sample "In The Ghetto" all of a sudden? On top of the other negative things that have been mentioned in this thread, what if a release would kick start "Elvis was a racist" once again?

R Kelly told VIBE magazine, "I haven't studied Elvis, but I've followed enough interviews and documentaries of him to know. And I see parallels."

-------------------------

Kayne West recently sampled "Diamonds Are Forever."
Dame Shirley Bassey was not fond of the output.

Diamonds From Sierra Leone

[Intro]
Diamonds are forever
They won't leave in the night
Have no fear that they might
Desert me

[Chorus]
Diamonds are forever (forever, forever)
Throw your diamonds in the sky if you feel the vibe
Diamonds are forever (forever, forever, forever)
The Roc is still alive every time I rhyme.
Forever ever? Forever ever? Ever, ever? Ever, ever? Ever, ever? Ever, ever?......

Close your eyes and imagine, feel the magic
Vegas on acid,
Seen through Yves St. Laurent glasses
And I've realized that I've arrived, cuz
It take more than a magazine to kill my Vibe does
he write his own rhymes, so sort of
I think 'em
That mean I forgot better sh*t than u ever thought up
Damn, is he really that caught up?
I ask if you talkin' bout classics, do my name get brought up?
I remember I couldn't afford a Ford Escort or even a four-track recorder
so its only right that I let the top drop on a drop-top Porsche
Its for yourself that's important
If a stripper named Porscha and u get tips from many men
Then your fat friend her nickname is Minivan
Excuse me,
That's just the Henny, man, I smoke, I drink, I'm supposed to stop I can't because

[Chorus]
Diamonds are forever (forever, forever)
Throw your diamonds in the sky if you feel the vibe
Diamonds are forever (forever, forever, forever)
The Roc is still alive every time I rhyme.
Forever ever? Forever ever? Ever, ever? Ever, ever? Ever, ever? Ever, ever?......

I was sick about awards
Couldn't nobody cure me
Only playa that got robbed but kept all his jewelry
Alicia Keys tried to talk some sense to them
30 minutes later seems there's no convincing them
What more can you ask for?
The international awards? nah
Who complains about when he is old?
And throw a tantrum like he is 3 years old
You gotta love it though somebody still speaks from his soul
And wouldn't change by the change, or the game, or the fame,
When he came, in the game, he made his own name
Now all I need is y'all to pronounce my name
Its Kanye - But some of my plaques - they still say Kayne
Got family in the D, Kin-folk from Motown
Back in the Chi - them folks ain't from Motown
Life movin' too fast I need to slow down
Girl ain't give me no ass, ya need to go down

Diamonds are forever (forever, forever)
My father Ben said I need Jesus
So he took me to church and let the water wash over my ceaser
Diamonds are forever (forever, forever)
The preacher said we need leaders
Right then my body got still like a paraplegic

You know who you can call you gotta best believe it
The Roc stand tall and you would never believe it
Take your diamonds and throw 'em up like you bulimic
Yea the beat cold but the flow is anemic
After debris settles and the dust get swept off
Big K pick up where young Hov left off
Right when magazines wrote Kanye West off
I dropped my new sh*t sound like the best of
A&R's lookin' like "pssh we messed up"
Grammy night, damn right, we got dressed up
Bottle after bottle till we got messed up
In the studio, where really though, yea he next up
People askin' me if I'm gon' give my chain back
That'll be the same day I give the game back
You know the next question dog "Yo, where Dame at?"
This track the Indian dance to bring our reign back
"What's up with you and Jay, man, are y'all ok man?"
They pray for the death of our dynasty like Amen
R-r-r-right here stands a-man
With the power to make a diamond with his bare hands...

Diamonds are forever (forever, forever)
Throw your diamonds in the sky if you feel the vibe
Diamonds are forever (forever, forever, forever)
The Roc is still alive every time I rhyme.
Forever ever? Forever ever? Ever, ever?

I wonder how many parents on this messageboard would let their 15yr old move in with a 24yr old world famous rock star. Its not as if Elvis wasn't sexually active, he was extremely sexually active from early on in his career so is there ANYONE on this mb who would let their young child move in with someone like this? Elvis may or may not have had intercourse with Priscilla but you can bet he had her naked which to me is perverted.

I would have told Elvis to go f##k himself if he had asked for my child
to move in with him.

If this guy doing his version will cause publicity like this, I don't want to see it. Also why can't we take Priscilla's word for it that she did not have intercourse with EP until married and nothing inappropiate happened. Elvis had mentioned her moving in at 17 or 18, heck in 1962, my older sister married and was pregnant, she was a grand total of 18 years old. Never once was EP's behaviour towards women out of line, just ask the countless of women he was with, they've all said as much.

I don't even know why we are discussing non entities along with Elvis on this board?! I have never heard any "music" by R. Kelly or 50 cents and I don't want to. That sort of filth should be kept on obscure radio stations where it belongs.
And if YOU were as good looking as Elvis, wouldn't YOU wanna go out and be seen with 19 year old girls??!!

Fri Nov 04, 2005 10:45 pm

promocollector u were there :?: wow tell me more plzzzzzzzzzzz elvis cant win can he, people believe what people say about him if its bad but if something is said that is postative then that must be a lie or put under microscope too. im sure miss presley would have let us know if he had been with her so to speak prior to marriage. she was so sweet & innocent wasnt she  poor miss presley

Well, Lakeisha is welcome here and let's not be so harsh.

Personally, I could do without this "duet".
