I had to vote for Jailhouse Rock, but the poll missed a very VERY big Elvis movie (and my all time fave):

Viva Las Vegas.

Thu Sep 15, 2005 10:49 pm

Yes I agree. I had Viva Las Vegas (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1964)
in there and it said I had to many so I had to delete it.
Viva Las Vegas.
still learning

It doesn't take much to keep you entertained, does it?

Of the choices given I voted for Girl Happy. Just pure fluff & fun that I've never tired of. Ahead of GH in my top 3 are Fun In Acapulco and Blue Hawaii.

Although the best acting job from Elvis was "King Creole", my favorite overall movie is "Jailhouse Rock"

"Flaming Star" is very good, also.

King Creole is one of those peer pressure examples.

You must like King Creole! It's great! You mean you don't think it's great? What's wrong with you!???

I myself like the soundtrack material - those songs are excellent

but that has to be one of the most slit-your-wrists depressing stories ever filmed.

Fri Sep 16, 2005 2:34 am

Maybe Elvis pressure because it was his favorite. And that says a lot if he was proud of his work on that one compared to the others.

Not sure about the peer pressure thing, but I'm pretty sure that most who say they like it legitimately do. Apart from Elvis' performance, there are other factors that make it stand out, including the quality of the supporting cast and the cinematography. When choosing a favourite Elvis film, King Creole will be right up there for most because there aren't that many true high points in his screen career. Of course there are other films that are more fun to watch.

Exactly TJ.

His great acting was a result of the script, director, and the other examples you gave.

Watching Elvis sway and sing in the jazzy nightclub scenes are great

those should be extracted as "music videos" available to watch separately.

But I don't like the Harold Robbins story nor the script.

as a film it's like it's two different roles
inter-cut with a different project altogether

Danny brooding in the alley....Elvis smiling on the stage...
brooding in the alley...smiling on the stage...

And yes, there are Elvis films that are more fun to watch.

I voted Loving You on the poll

Fri Sep 16, 2005 3:06 am

My Top 3 Elvis movies would have to be

King Creole
Jailhouse Rock
Loving You

They're all classics!

They may not be Academy Award material, but if only the quality of the 60s Elvis movies would have been equal to these, well...

Nuff said!

That's probably the one I get the biggest kick out of and have watched the most times. I think KC is technically a better film, but the more lighthearted nature of Loving You makes it good for repeat viewing.

Fri Sep 16, 2005 3:23 am

Loving you is silly with the broken guitar string bit.

Fri Sep 16, 2005 3:27 am

Harum Scarum?

So do yourself a favor and never ever watch it again. It could (possibly) destroy the magic you felt once as a kid. :D

BTW - welcome on board!

Kinc Creole is the best acting.
The funniest is Girl Happy.

Fri Sep 16, 2005 5:17 am

Here's my Essential Dozen
#1 King Creole
#2 Jailhouse Rock (an extremely close 2nd to 'Creole')
#3 Follow That Dream
#4 Tickle Me
#5 Loving You
#6 Kid Galahad
#7 Roustabout
#8 Wild In The Country
#9 Flaming Star
#10 Love Me Tender
#11 Viva Las Vegas
#12 Change Of Habit

And for the fun of it the all time worst: Kissin' Cousins (14 days of just about the worst of everything.)

Fri Sep 16, 2005 7:21 am

I voted for King Creole (no peer pressure involved in my decision.)

However, am I the only one on this board who thinks Charro is not that bad of a film?
