The recent discussion of Elvis' best music has resulted in this poll. Out of what I have listed, where do you think Elvis' best performances came from? I've pretty much covered a wide area of his amazing career. If I've not listed your favorite era, please post your comments. I wanted to list Aloha, but ran out of room.

I love Sun era but it is not my favorite. I voted for it (54) because without that there would not have been 1956(explosion) and without 1956 I would dare say we would not be here on this site because it would most probably not exist! Oops did not read carefully. Deciding for me personally is impossible like choosing a favorite kid. You can't.

as sessions i go Memphis 69, coz he was never better there! for concerts i go EOT and MSG, judging from the footage i've seen and everything i heard, he never played harder. he is in top form for those shows

I have favorites from every era, it's just too difficult to choose. But the most exciting time to watch for me would be his comeback period, '68-69, knowing that his personal pressure was so great at the time, having finally given up the movies and wanting to reinvent himself---seeing how he prevailed so greatly---just too cool. That's his greatness, to have such a long career, with so much evolution, and most fans love some of everything. It'll never be done again.

Fair enough. I just assumed the music that caused the worldwide sensation in the first place would be pretty much first choice for inclusion.

TJ, Exactly!

We who were there at the time saw the astounding impact of the 1956-59 recordings.

The 60 to 63? Songs by Elvis won over the general public.

Then we had quite a time hanging on:-(

But we could explore those wonderful Sun sessions and the beautiful Gospel music.

Personally, I would have to go for a tie between

The American '69 sessions
The Nashville '70 sessions

...but that leaves both Burbank '68, Nashville '60 and the SUN sessions out in the cold...

Impossible task!

I voted for June 1970 Nashville Sessions, but it was tough. I was tempted by August 1970 Las Vegas. Memphis 1969 running a very close third.

How could you omit the Jan-July 1956 RCA sessions ?

He took the sound he'd pioneered at Sun Studios and, without 'selling out' in any way, he made it a little more rock 'n' roll, a tad more commercial, a touch more 'pop' oriented and ended up with some of the greatest stuff he ever comitted to tape !

Again, I didn't omit. I ran out of spaces. The 1956 era is one of my favorites.

Anything that is mentioned will be tallied up at the end whether it is listed in the poll or not.

Memphis 69 was definitly his best music. The Sun era and 56-58 was undoubtably his greatest cultural and historical achievements. Nashville 70 and the Graceland sessions are options that I personally love. I voted Memphis 69 but really, everything Elvis did could have something positive said about it.

I sometimes look at it terms of his ages, not the decades.

He did his best-selling work while in his 20s.

He's in the history books because of what Elvis at age 21-23 did.

He did his best "modern era" album music between age 34 and 37.
