Can you post a screen grab of the exact moment you mean here? The only stage lights I saw were when he does the crouch thing. (Sorry, I can't post screengrabs from anything).

The entrance "before" I Got A Woman (do you mean the exact two-second scene that follows Lamar saying "Yeah, bring 'em down now"?) is not the Blue Nail Suit. It looks like the firework suit. It's definitely not blue anyhow.
if that can help you

Yeah, okay. The low crouch thing. That, presumably, is from Indy. But it's from one angle, and no other cameras are seen here, FWIW.

But there is another bit directly after Lamar where Elvis walks to the stage in a white suit (taken from behind, you can't even see Elvis' face).

Scott wrote: Or - and I think this is more likely - the backstage footage ("the lights are low" comments) could easily have been filmed in Little Rock, which means the concert footage could be from Richmond.
Another point here.

The backstage one-liner duet with Lamar (the song called Wandering) ... has this not been established as from backstage at Little Rock?

"I've been a wandering early and late,
New York City to the Golden Gate,
And it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wandering .
Been working in the army, working on a farm,
All I got to show for it's just this muscle in my arm,
And it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wandering.
There's snakes on the mountain, there's eels in the sea,
Red-headed woman made a fool out of me,
And it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wandering.
My daddy is an engineer, my brother drives a hack,
Sister takes in washing and the baby balls the jack,
And it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wandering."

This tripod thing is really mysterious to me. I'm not sure it's a camera, for several reasons:
1) It seems to be at a useless angle-which is even more odd given that it is stationary.
2) If it is a camera, WE haven't seen anything from it, as it cannot possibly be a 16mm film camera, it looks more like a security camera, It's definately the type that would send an electronic feed that would presumably be recorded on magnetic tape, as there seems to be no film canister attached, and no one manning it.

It could potentially be any number of different things that could simply look like a camera (maybe a fancy wireless light-meter or something?)
I wish I had a 1972-era film equipment catalogue about now

Ok, so it seems it is an old video camera of some sort. I did a google search for old video equipment and think it pretty closely resembles this model:
http://www.labguysworld.com/Museum008_014.htm

The Dage Vidicon 800, mostly used for surveillance work, which brings me back to....WTF???

Anything shot on this camera would have been useless to the EOT producers in terms of quality, so I seriously doubt anyone asssociated with MGM put it there.

It's not pointed at the audience (and there only seems to be one) so it doesn't appear very useful as far as security is concerned, and it also doesn't really seem to be pointed at Elvis so you wouldn't think it would be used for any in-house TV relay to "box" seats or whatever.

I'm stumped...anybody have any suggestions/further enlightenment?

This Q could have been in the previous post <complete shows filmed> as it all ties in really !

like ALL these posts , this has pretty much gone OFF topic (ie: CBS 77 is NOT vegas 72)
and resulted in pot shots & going down the pain very quickly !

personnaly, my gut instinct is that -
that <amazing> & very surprising footage was NOT shot by MGM or in its entirety but by a news crew & very briefly - maybe CC rider only or at best 2/3 songs ! ??????? :?

It may have been a "static" camera set by MGM to capture the overall show to maintain continuity in the editing process. Conversely, it was some kind of archival routine put in place by management.

It is Charlie Hodges auto cue machine.

It told him when to laugh, to what level and when to stop. A scarf icon used to pop up when it was time to drape his masters neck. and a glass icon appeared when it was water time.

thats very interesting !

christian: are those shots from little rock ???

what locations can we confirm this type of cam was defo in place & was it purely 72 ???

i dont know anything about that camera BUT
thats certainly a professional camera of some kind & being mounted on a tripod so close to the stage means it was obviously intended to produce something or capture images of some kind that we're deemed important enough

and it obviously had the colnoels (& elvis's) permission to be there so id guess at it being MGM equipment !

, however i dont think a camera that size in 1972 would produce footage of very decent quality - ie: not as good as the buffalo karate handheld footage !
i also dont think that its recording to film & my hunch is that its providing a live feed to a monitor , most likely in B&W though i cant pinpoint why ???
i dont think its filming & i dont think its related to security - i dont see red & sonny staring at a little B&W monitor backstage - no , they'd be grabbing their holsters at he front of the stage!

also, i dont think its on elvis anyway, unless its pointing right at his mike stand but he'd obviously move around a lot anyway !

does anyone know exactly where its pointing??
(the drums???)

it'd be nice to know what this is but i dont think any footage is ever gonna come from this but then i still think theres tons of PROPER footage anyway !

as for the multi-tracks & how many shows ???
well it looks like its only the 4 known shows in RCA vaults BUT if it was filmed properly & completely, (ie: little rock) it would have had to have been multi-tracked if they intended to use actual sound but if they only wanted clips - as in the love me tender montage then they could & did use overdubbed sound -
my hunch is that its only the 4 shows that exist on multi-track but who knows ???????

The Doc has come the closest!

In the early 70's that type of camera was for "home" use. It recorded onto a 1 inch reel to reel TV video recorder. These recordes predatef the 1 inch cassette which in turn was replaced by the familar VCR.

We had two of these machines at the advertising agency I worked at the time.

The show was being taped for Elvis own use...no more and no less and any result still existing would be as rare as any "bed room" tapes.

Alan, any chance that perhaps the Colonel had this setup, as opposed to EP?

Could have been the Colonel...but I would plump for Elvis....video was a new toy for him at the time.

The length of one reel was very low, from memory about 30 minutes. Extremely difficult to thread up. It might just have been used to capture certain moves. I doubt whether sound would have been captured.

kiwi - thanks for that info -
good to know exactly what the cam is -
what kinda quality would that produce?
akin to ex 8mm etc ???

how do u know it was only for elvis's use ?
thats speculation isnt it ??

I cant imagine EP wanting to film any shows for his own private viewing

By todays standards it would look like good quality CCTV. We used them for film transfer.

I could well imagine Elvis wanting to know what his moves looked like. The video version of a mirror.

I repeat you could not use them for a complete non stop show.

The use is speculation but I can't think of a better reason

If any sound was recorded it would be terrible, out of synch, and bandwith allocated for sound was as wide as a sound cassette and limited to mono.
