I thought the biggest selling album of all time is the Eagles " Hotel California".

Wrong on both counts, The EAGLES Greatest HITS was the biggest selling album in USA, while Thriller was the biggest selling album in the world.

The thing that people seem to forget is this; back then folks didn't buy records like they do now. They would listen to the jukebox or the radio.
An albums ( major label ) price was around 5 bucks in the 50s right? Thats alot of money for a kid back then. He would have sold more records if they didn't cost so much.
Also, there weren't as many people then ( the population was much lower ).
