Pre Hound Dog Publicity Photo Shoot In the Same Studio?

Sat Jun 07, 2003 6:25 am

In the Foreword by Peter Guralnick in Ernst's book A Life In Music, he says that when he and Ernst visted the former RCA studio where Hound Dog & Don't Be Cruel were cut, "Ernst insisted that the pattern of the acoustic tile on the wall pointed conclusively to the fact that publicity pictures had been taken there prior to what we thought to be Elvis' first visit to New York,...".
Is it possible for someone to post a picture, or pictures of such publicity photos supporting this claim? Alternatively if you could tell me what book or other publication to look in. Thanks.

Hi!! I'm not sure how I can prove his claims, but I can point you to a site with pictures from that occasion. They are all scanned from the book Song Of Innocence by Ger Rijff

I think that this is the wall he was talking about:

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. As I understand it these shots are from the actual Hound Dog sessions (I think they're Wertheimer shots, aren't they?). However the way Guralnick's Foreword reads, he suggests there are publicity photos taken in the same studio sometime before July 2, 1956. Now if they were taken July 1, 1956 when Elvis did the Steve Allen Show it's not such a big deal (this is quite possible considering he apparently arrived in NY, NY at 6.15am with Scotty, Bill & DJ so perhaps they went over to the recording studio to check it out). My understanding is that July 1, 1956 marks the first time Elvis ever went to NY. If the alleged publicity photos were taken prior to July 1 or 2, then we have some interesting speculation to contemplate about Elvis and what exactly he was doing in NY.

Guralnickis referring to Photos shoot in NY on December 1, 1995, after Elvis signed with RCA. Some of these photos were used on the back of the 1st LP Elvis Presley. Also. check out the cover to Today, Tomorrow and Forever - this is another shot from that same session.

1) The first time Elvis Presley was in New York City was on March 23, 1955 (failed audition for Arthur Godfrey TV Show at Manhattan CBS studio) Scotty, and Bill and manager Bob Neal was with Elvis that trip.

2) Elvis returned to New York City on Dec. 1, 1955 (accompanied only by Col. Parker) to meet the president of RCA-Victor at Rockefeller Plaza and talk about their mutual game plan for promoting Elvis now that they had signed him away from Sun.

Photos were taken of Elvis that day at RCA 24th St Studio (including one with he shaking hands with Eddy Arnold - see my thread about Elvis-Eddy-Family Connection) Most recently, a 12/1/55 photo was colorized and used on the cover of the Today Tomorrow & Forever boxset. That is a NY pic. Those photos taken by RCA Publicity Director Anne Fulchino.

Oh ok - the penny has now dropped (ding) :) Thanks for your help guys. For the life of me I couldn't comprehend these "publicity shots". Perhaps in the second edition Guralnick will be a little more precise. Thanks again.
