Hey Ciscoking! I think "Run On" is the coolest religious song he ever recorded. I also like "I´ve Got Confidence" and "Seeing Is Believing".

I LOVE 'EM ALL!

Fri Jun 06, 2003 10:44 pm

I must admit that the entire catalogue of Elvis' gospel recordings are favourites. But, there are two songs I find a little hard to accept, and they are SEEING IS BELIEVING and PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HAND!
Otherwise I love 'em all!

Fri Jun 06, 2003 10:47 pm

How about...
If That Isn't Love
Run On
Reach Out To Jesus
How Great Thou Art (Dec 13 75MS)
Why Me Lord?
You'll Never Walk Alone
Precious Lord, Take My Hand
Peace In The Valley (Ed Sullivan show version)

Fri Jun 06, 2003 11:10 pm

Gotta be Run On. Love that one. Peace In The Valley is my second favorite. He was a great religious singer, and that is part of the reason why I think his version of Bridge Over Troubled Water is the best version.

Paul Simon said he based the song on a religious song he heard on tv(I think I heard this in a Dick Cavett interview).

I forgot to mention Run On. This one is also very cool.
Thank you for reminding me.

Interesting thread! It prompted me to pull out the "Amazing Grace" set. I have always been partial to the following (no particular order):

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
MILKY WHITE WAY
PEACE IN THE VALLEY
I BELIEVE
BY AND BY
HE TOUCHED ME
LEAD ME, GUIDE ME

Crying in the Chapel

What about "Crying in the Chapel"? That's one of my favorites!

All these songs mentioned Elvis sings greatly. I don't seem to listen to them very often though. Just every now and then they come out.

I kinda like... A Thing Called Love.

Crying in the chapel
if that isn't love
he touched me
swing down sweet chariot
Miracle of the rosary
let us pray

are my favorites.

Overall, i prefer the 60's recordings and rarely listen to the 50's stuff.

John is right - I Believe is a ball ripper. I played this several times today after a loooooooong time of not hearing Essential Elvis Vol 2. It's hard to believe this came out in 1988.
I dig that line "Every time I hear a new born baby cry". Go play Essential 2, it's a top alblum. Also, good value is found in Elvis' laughter on It Is No Secret. I still giggle when he sings "It 'tis norrrrrr seeee - cret, what God can do".

My all time favorite is How Great Thou Art!
Elvis' live versions are always very powerful!

Even today, during Elvis The Concert (in Rotterdam) the audience got up near the end of the song and gave singer and band a standing ovation.

Just great!

My favorites are:

Mansion Over The Hilltop
Stand By Me
How great thou art
He touched me
turn your eyes upon Jesus/Nearer my god to thee

And I believe that it is such a shame Elvis only sang a couple of lines of "The Lighthouse". That is such a beautiful song.

Thijs077:

Are you talking about Elvis singing "The Lighthouse" from "Elvis On Tour"?
Because I don't think he actually sang any of that, only the Stamps.
Just curious because I haven't heard of him singing that song.
