Converts to Elvis Presley.

Eileen Battersby, literary correspondent of, "The Irish Times", discovered Elvis Presley by accident on her car radio, her two thousand word piece on how she discovered his voice concluded with this paragraph:
" The Gospel sound, all the catchy rock and roll numbers, the ballads, the love songs, Elvis was, and is a great singer for many reasons; he had a musical, textured rhythmic voice, that emotional intelligence. Concentrate on his voice; sweet, remorseful, defiant suggestive. Unlike so many of the superstars of modern popular music, he could sing - that's why he is the King."

The sophisticated relatively young journalist is probably unaware of Elvis' dislike of "the King", title. Her article appeared last year just after the 25TH Anniversary, she had inadvertently heard Elvis on her car radio and actually LISTENED.

Any other notable converts to Elvis besides the millions of young unsung fans of recent years?

That's a nice essay. <>I read in a magazine where Robin Williams mentioned that in his teens he never much cared for Elvis. Over the years though he said he grew into a big fan especially of Elvis' gospel music. "How Great Thou Art" was mentioned as a favorite.

Also Ted Koppel on the August 15 1997 Nightline commerorating the 20th anniversary of Presley's death, mentioned how he didnt like Elvis's music in 1977 but in the 20 years since he had become a great admirer.

Also Chuck "D" of Public Enemy who once said "Elvis didn't mean sh** to me" was recently interviewed in Mojo and admitted that Elvis was a brilliant performer. He mentioned "Love Me Tender", "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Suspicious Minds" as favorites.

My wife didn't care much for Elvis. But now she's kinda a fan.

I think my wife knows the lyrics to almost every Elvis song.
We've been together for about 8 years now.
She's not a fan, so to speak, but she loves me. Thank God!!!

To tell you the truth, if she wouldn't have been able to put up with all the Elvis music I play in my car, it could have been a tough decision!!!

I've been down that road with other women in the past.
Those that didn't like Elvis didn't last too long. No lie.

Maureen my wife was an Elvis fan when we met 45 years ago. She still is:-)

Young Elvis look-a-likes left 10,000 fans all shook up with their impersonations
of the King.

Coventry schoolkids Sam Taylor and Lucy and Luke Purvis went to see Elvis's
original band perform at the NEC on Sunday dressed as the Mississippi-born
legend.

They were sitting on the front row of the balcony and when they stood up to
dance during the interval to recent hit A Little Less Conversation they grabbed
the attention of the sell-out crowd.

Lyn Taylor, of Aldrich Avenue, Tile Hill North, said her son Sam, 8, and his
cousins Lucy, 11, and Luke, 9, went down a storm.

The 31-year-old receptionist said: "They were all gathering in the aisles -
10,000 people were shouting 'go on boys'. It was incredible, electric."

Sam, a pupil at Templars Primary school in Tile Hill, Lucy, who goes to Tile
Hill Wood school and Luke, who attends Allesley Primary, instantly became stars.

Lyn said: "Everyone was applauding - it was like they were actually Elvis.
People were kissing them. We were so proud - we were all shook up!"

Alan Purvis, of Peregrine Drive, Hill Park, Allesley, is Lyn's brother. He said
after his daughter Lucy and son Luke performed, concert-goers kept stopping them
to take pictures.

His wife Julie added: "There were thousands of people taking their photos, it
was unbelievable. It's how pop stars must feel."
