question about "American Crown Jewels"

Mon May 26, 2003 1:41 am

I have FTWH, Memphis Sessions (FTD) and Suspicious Minds (BMG). I don't own American Crown Jewels. Could anyone enlighten me which tracks/takes on ACJ are exclusive to that release, are not found on any other official or non-official releases?

James -

In my collection [I don't have every unofficial release], the only titles which appear only on American Crown Jewels are:

You'll Think Of Me - Take 7

And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind - Take 6

Kentucky Rain - Take 8

On american crown jewels there is an X rated version of "Only the Strong Survive" which you won't ever find on any FTD/BMG CD.

Another Option

Instead of looking for American.... you can look foward to Finding the Way home, a great 2-Cd set with a lot of songs on it...

But he will find it on FTWH which he already says he has (albeit in mono).

Additionally the same track can also be found on the import disc "Animal Instinct"

Sorry, can't give you a concrete answer on what is exclusively on ACJ only though.

What is required to have the complete picture of the American Studio sessions?

FTD Memphis Sessions
Finding The Way Home
American Crown Jewels
Suspicious Minds BMG
The Complete 60's Masters Vol. 1

Anything else?

There are a couple of other releases that offer additional material, but I would say that the ones you’ve listed are the best in terms of both content and quality. There’s an old bootleg LP album titled “Memphis Memories” that featured undubbed masters from acetates, but the sound quality was poor. A CD release titled “From Burbank To Memphis” on the Majo label claimed to feature alternate and undubbed performances from these sessions, but the material included on this release sounded as though it had some of the stereo channels removed to my ears, and I would say the same thing about the Bilko label’s CD “The Other Side Of Memphis” which also included the 1980 remake of “Kentucky Rain” and material from June 1970.

The CD “American Rejects” did feature undubbed and alternate performances taken from acetate in good sound quality, but as it only included seven tracks, and it’s quite an old title now, it could prove to be an expensive purchase. Further information on the three CD titles I have mentioned can be found in the import list section of this site.

Hello
this version take 7 I think also appear on FTWH as you get almost the full session.

Great track but sounds a little muffled

Thank you for the info Sgt Bilko!

What label was this collection put out by? (sorry for the poor english!)
I have never even heard of this collection - you say the sound quality is excellent... is it stereo or mono?

American set

As far as I know this was a 6 cdr set that was issued without any label info ( please somebody correct me if I am wrong), the sound quality is indeed very good.

This was a CDR only release. It was a good idea to compile and issue all of the available material, and it sounds as though it’s sourced from a number of different releases both official and unofficial. Unfortunately, the original releases used the same cover photo for all six volumes, but alternate cover artwork is now circulating.

Surely the tracks will be mono or stereo depending on which CD a particular track was taken from - these are only cdr compilations. So the material from FTWH will be mono .........tracks from the Memphis Anthology stereo and so on.

Also this compilation is obsolete since the Memphis Sessions on FTD and the Today Tomorrow and Forever boxset from BMG provided additional material after these CDR's were put together.
