Afternoon show. It was a bit longer and I'd rather have seen Elvis sing Reconsider Baby than Impossible Dream.

His version of "Reconsider Baby" was not as great as the 1960 recording. As far as the other four live versions which he had been recorded while doing them, up to that time, 3 from 1961, 1 from 1969, I had not heard any of them yet.

On the other hand, I had yet to hear a single version of "The Impossible Dream", which as a Latin American with partial Spanish ancestors, blew my mind the moment I bought the album in late August of 1972, one which my roomate and I heard ten times as we drove on a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans with speakers to die for, from Miami to Boston.

Anyways, the story of THE MAN FROM LA MANCHA was OBLIGATORY reading since we each were 7, a jewel of a story based on Miguel de Cervantes's novel Don Quixote. I later found out that he had sang it in Vegas and in Lake Tahoe, in 1971, but since he didnt sing it in Boston, which was the concert I attended, on Novenber 10, 1971, I tend to favour the NYC evening concert over the afternoon show, precisely because of "The Impossible dream" . My roomate saw Elvis before I did, in his case in Mobile, Alabama on Sept. 14, in 1970, but he didnt sing any of the two songs there, either. We were delighted to hear "The Impossibke Dream", over and over again.

Wish I had been there, in NYC, that night.

I would have preferred the AS and then locked myself in somewhere to be able to see the ES.
Only problem: June 1972 was 2 months before I was born and there is an ocean between the event and my birthplace.

Setlists were very similar so I would choose the evening show because of "The Impossible Dream".

Thanks to everyone who voted or commented so far. It's a very difficult decision and like many of you one of the factors would have to be whether you would like to hear Elvis singing 'Reconsider Baby' or 'The Impossible Dream'.
I also love the way he performs the bluesy version of 'Heartbreak Hotel' and the way he starts 'Hound Dog' (especially in the afternoon show with the army style ending "Hut, Two, Three, Four...") in a kind of slow tempo jazzy version then steps it up a gear and tears into the song! Anyone else like this? :D

I agree the afternoon show is better, and that the afternoon jumpsuit is more beautiful, no doubt, but the unvarnished truth is that the evening album sold thrice as much as that of the afternoon show, while the suit for the afternoon sold at auction, CAPE INCLUDED, for $177,157 against the $1,012,500 garnered by the eyelet jumpsuit CAPE ALSO INCLUDED. Incredibly, neither of the belts used during those two concerts were a part of the sale. And the fact he sang "The impossible Dream " in one show and not in another is neither here nor there. LOL

Here's the Led Zeppelin crew awaiting for the start of the afternoon show.

Do you not understand why the evening show album sold thrice as much as the afternoon show. If you do, then your comment is irrelevant.

I would take additional fuel cells and use the time machine to see both shows. I love the afternoon show for a rare song or two for the period and the evening show for being the standard of the time. I also love both suits that Elvis wore.

Then I would make sure to have enough fuel cells for the trip back to the future.

Fantastic thread. In fact, I am 100% in agreement with the comments made on this thread by all our friends in this forum especially the ones who allow me to live rent free in their heads.

Both shows present Elvis at his best, IMHO..., but if I had to choose one it would be the afternoon show. The show was longer and had a couple of additional songs than the evening performance. The set list on that afternoon show was varied and really quite good.

Evening performance. Not even close.

His voice is cracking and skipping in several songs that gets annoying and grating, which I’m thinking has something to do with, not completely awake yet.

Good show though.

Yep! Love that ending to Hound Dog.
