Are you sure that you have the right link? There's no mention of Elvis in the link you provided.

Thanks for sharing this YouTube link. Elton John's entire speech is really terrific, it's worth a couple of minutes. Bernie Taupin's closing comments are also quite good.

Right off the bat Elton recalls how Elvis turned his world around in 1956:

When I grew up as a little boy in suburban London, I grew up listening to Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy May and his Orchestra, all those wonderful people in the '50s. And then suddenly I heard "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis Presley, and my whole world changed. And thank God it did because, I remember my mother bringing the 78 home, and that's all I wanted to do was to play rock and roll after hearing that.

And then of course, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, all great piano players, came along and then they changed my life too. Thank you, America for the music you've given us, all over the world. It's an incredible legacy that you have, all the wonderful blues, the jazz, the classical music, all the songs that the Gershwin Brothers wrote, it's just incredible.

Very good stuff from Sir Elton.

'Heartbreak Hotel' as originally released in the UK was pressed on the HMV label only.

The black label variant you posted (RCA 1088) is a re-issue from November 1958 where the song was released as the flip to 'All Shook Up'.

I didnt know he saw him, as he put it " at the Hilton". Wonder which year was that and that may include the year before it was a Hilton, as a lot of people recall seeing him there in 1971, when it wasnt the Hilton yet.

Could he had been one of these 111,362? Or one of these 88,616?

I bet he did. She met Elton when Elvis played Largo, Maryland in the summer if 1976, as I recall.

I have always admired Elton's willingness to not follow the crowd.

Here's another recollection of by Elton for a 1992 VH! special.

It's not a PBS award show.

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is an award given to a composer or performer for their lifetime contributions to popular music. Created in 2007 by the United States Library of Congress, the prize is named after brothers George and Ira Gershwin, whose contributions to popular music included songs such as I Got Rhythm, Embraceable You, and Someone to Watch Over Me, the orchestral pieces Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, and the opera Porgy and Bess.

The ceremony was held on March 20th, the PBS coverage debuted on April 8th:

I always thought Elton saw Elvis only in 76.
Does anybody know which other show he attend?
