Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Got my sets. Everything sounds fine but I'll double check it a little later on and update the "Concerts at wrong speed" thread.
The disclaimer sticker warning needs to be about Eliasson's awful mastering rather than any tape issues, he's mastered it too loud, it's too bass heavy and there is too much compression applied, meaning he's made already fairly dull sounding tapes sound even duller.

Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
I think Stateline sounds wonderful: clear yet warm, intimate as was the showroom of Lake Tahoe and with plenty of 'kick'. Compare the May 19 recordings released on High Sierra FTD and they sound much better on this Stateline release. There's only so much you can do on 48 year old mono recorded one track tapes. No need at all for bashing Eliasson regarding this release in my opinion.

Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Lene Reidel's mastering on High Sierra sounds infinitely better than Jan Eliasson's mastering on any of the Tahoe shows he's worked on, High Sierra so far is the best release from this engagement.

The top track is a rough idea of how the tape would look like without Eliasson's mastering, the bottom is Eliasson's master.

Am I missing something here. Your first sentence states everything sounds fine then you rip it to shreds. Hope the artwork looks good.Elvis2000 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2024 3:48 pmGot my sets. Either that or sack the guy, there's numerous folks on this board that could do a far better job than him.

Jan Eliasson is the new Lene Reidel.

For those who have it already, which is the best show of the 3 in your opinion?

I was talking about speed in the first sentence which is why I followed up with "update the "Concerts at wrong speed" thread".rollinson1 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2024 6:25 pmAm I missing something here. Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
It's funny how they're the complete opposite of each other in terms of mastering, Lene kept things fairly quiet and dull with no compression used, she did use a lot of noise reduction mainly at the start and I think that changed a little down the line, sometimes a little excessively, Tucson is a great example. Jan loves the loud, bass heavy and compression heavy sound with no noise reduction at all.

Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
I personally dislike the heavy noise-reduction on many of Lene Reidel's works and I like it a lot that Eliasson isn't afraid to leave in some or most of the tape noise. I think Jan's approach, in that regard, is a very honest one and very considerate of the source.Elvis2000 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2024 6:56 pmIt's funny how they're the complete opposite of each other in terms of mastering, Lene kept things fairly quiet and dull with no compression used, she did use a lot of noise reduction mainly at the start and I think that changed a little down the line, sometimes a little excessively, Tucson is a great example. Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
I can respect the lack of noise reduction from Jan, that is probably his best attribute as an engineer but everything else is amateurish, I think an in-between of Lene and Jan mastering styles and we could have better sounding releases. Balanced EQ, very little to no noise reduction, no heavy compression and everything running at the right speed, it's not that hard to do to be honest. On Tape 1972 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2024 7:51 pmI personally dislike the heavy noise-reduction on many of Lene Reidel's works and I like it a lot that Eliasson isn't afraid to leave in some or most of the tape noise. Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Listened to all shows, disc one and two give us similar performances, tight, straight and lingering on auto-pilot. Disc three is the best of the three for me, Elvis gave a tight performance, he was fully engaged however and gave a little more than usual.

Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Having just listened to these 3 shows I totally agree with this summery I would only add that VERY short versions of 'you don't have to say you love me' this season- all under 2 minutes long!

Any notable good performances? How are the versions of "Bridge?"

Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Regardless of who engineered this release, it contains bland concerts, both in terms of setlists and performance quality. FTD’s High Sierra is the best one-stop release for this casino engagement.

Or ignore this if you don't have the old High Sierra release and pick up the three disc set.

Or you can all watch my video which is a compilation of all the previously released shows from Tahoe. You save money and get entertainment in return.

Buyer beware. Three discs of mediocrity with minimal entertainment value and little musical substance at a premium price.

Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Again, ignore this. They are on par with the High Sierra performance, disc three of the new set is the best of the four shows mentioned.midnightx wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2024 2:04 amBuyer beware. Three discs of mediocrity with minimal entertainment value and little musical substance at a premium price.
Re: New FTD: Stateline Sahara 1974
Good value, 3 new Tahoe shows for approximately $28 AUD per show. The sound is good, in my opinion it is an improvement over a bit flat High Sierra. The 3rd show is definitely a winner here.Elvis2000 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2024 9:59 amAgain, ignore this.
