Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
No big friend of those dull and heavy ballads from this album...

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
I like either version of the song. But, i also wish that Elvis had recorded more uptempo songs around that time. I always wanted to hear an entire album of Rock songs and an entire album of Blues songs.

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
In "A World With Our Own", it's not a problem to include "Never Again". The diversety of our man is what made him so great, imo! So, Yes!

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
Well said. But you have to wonder whether James, Ronnie or Glen D, ever mentioned to him or whether it was a deep, heartfelt move by Elvis to record these in the aftermath of a marriage breakdown and depression that possibly ensued.

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
.
Never Again was written by Billy Edd Wheeler and Jerry Chestnut. It wasn't recorded by anyone else before. It's an original Elvis Presley song. And those were scarce at that time. That makes this song interesting and stand out from many of the others recorded at the Jungle Room. And the lyrics fit him like a glove:
I hope I never ever love anyone this much again
I can't take it anymore
I've been hurt before
But never ever quite like this time
What will become of me when you're no longer here?
If I can't stop loving you
What am I to do?
You'll be free but where will I be?
Now that I'm used to love, how can I stand alone?
Now that love has come and gone
Like the ending of a song
A song my lonely heart keeps singing
Where do I go from here? Will I get over you?
If so, next time I'll be smart
I'll know before I start
A heart that don't care, don't get broken
I hope I never ever love anyone this much again
Never ever, never again, never again
A yes from me.

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
No, and no to the LP. Dire material, and Elvis at 41 sounding like he's 71. Never listen to it except for the 2 single sides.

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
No for me. It’s a leftover cut if I was producing an album in 77. However, with Presley being so unwell, they were desperate for material and I don’t blame them for trying.

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
The mix on the Our Memories of Elvis makes it even more obvious how poor his vocals were on this song.
Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
You are probably correct about that. I imagine it was the mood he was in at the time. I honestly never thought much about (or listened to the blues) until i heard Elvis record some of those type songs. It really gave me a new respect for that kind of music.Walter Hale 4 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 25, 2022 3:22 amWell said. Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
For me - Yes!
I remember buying the Moody Blue expanded CD in 2000 and being disapointed with most of the songs (which were unheard by me then) - the overall depressing mood was nothing I was counting for. But as the years went by, the songs grew on me and now, while I preceive the mood of both LPs, FEPBMT & MB, as still on the "dwonbeat" side, I appreciate the songs very much. Guess I needed some time to stomach them (to grow up to better understand them).
Having said that, Never Again, Love Coming Down, I'll Never Fall In Love Again, The Last Farewell, Solitaire are songs I value for their "haunting desolate" feel they have. They are perfect match with what was going on with Elvis' (mental) life at that time.

When your heart gets restless - time to move along,
When your heart gets weary - time to sing a song,
But when a dream is calling you
There's just one thing that you can do...
Follow That Dream (1961)

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
I like "Never Again" and the whole FEPB album very much.
It is almost a theme album for me with Elvis singing full with emotions. It is an album to close Your eyes and You can feel it all.
It is like an an Hank Williams album in barriton.
Great

Mate, i must admit i never considered it.
Elvis should've cut a full on renditions on Williams "I'm so Lonesome I could Cry" and "Cold, Cold Heart" in his 1976 voice, would've been rather nice.

Not completely wrecked,is how he should have sounded.Lonely Summer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 5:03 amHow was Elvis supposed to sound at 41? I suppose you walked a mile or two in his shoes.
This was the beginning of 1976. He sounded fine in December 1975, and yet he sounds thirty years older just two months later. And then sounded ok again in March 1976. He wasn't seriously ill. He wasn't even overworked - he hadn't worked in six weeks.
Accused of being "a nerd in his 20s." I wish.

Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
Elvis was still a relatively young man and he was in the shape he was at that age from lack of exercise and his basic lifestyle. I don't believe his voice was shot but lifestyle choices, probably improper singing technique and just poor physical shape affected his voice. He should have been consulting with a vocal coach to try to keep his voice in shape. It's just like every other aspect of the human body, once you are no longer a kid, it takes some work to keep things at their peak level.pmp wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 5:10 amNot completely wrecked,is how he should have sounded.Lonely Summer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 5:03 amHow was Elvis supposed to sound at 41? Re: Never Again - Yes or No ?
What in the hell does this actually mean ???
How does a 41 year sound like a 71 year old ???
My Pop is 75 and when he sings, it's like an angel just walked into the room.
And last I heard, Springsteen in his 70's hasn't sung this good in his whole career.

Imho, by this time, you can definitely hear a change from the "Today" sessions to the Graceland recordings. I'm not debating that.
Elvis was falling deeper and deeper and nothing from family to management was doing anything about it. What a waste.
