This week end there will be an auction involving several Elvis items, the highest expected sale amongst ALL the available ones, being that of the first TCB ring ever made, a gift from Elvis to JD at a concert in Asheville, NC.

Notice the presence of an item which proved elusive to WB, or to any one involved as far as the "Elvis" movie, and that is the Oscar
statuette won by Howard Greene for Cinematography for Universal's 1943 "Phantom of the Opera".

I am sure Baz will be amongst the bidders, desperate as he may, or may not be, to have an statuette that does not belong to his wife and which he can preside over its being burned into effigy. LOL

The 1972 Martin d28 story leaves some unanswered questions. The story doesn’t match , it had been a few years Since Norman had directed Elvis and I am not certain Elvis would have seen him in 77 so something does not add up

Well, if someone had told me say, in 1962, 1968, 1977, 1982, 1993, 2002, and 2022 that Elvis' influence would stretch, in less than a fortnight, to a furniture and design exhibition at the world renown "Milan Design Week", the largest in the world, launched for the first time in 1961 and currently attracting a half a million people for that week I would think that the stretch was impossible.

So I was forced to think twice when I saw this, published today. Hope EPE has a share in it.

Elvis' signed travel Bible sells for US$24,000 including buyer's fees at Sotheby's, NY last night. Fantastic price, given how small it is (6.3 x 4-1 inches) It was expected to fetch up to $5,000.

Well, now an estimated $1.9m to US$2.2 m. BMW 507, this one from 1959, hits the auction block in Monterey, CA at a date which bookends the anniversary of Elvis' death (15 to 17th August, 2023) and guess what the MECUM sellers are counting on? That prospective buyers read the MECUM story.

..................................................THE STORY.......................................................

There’s a reason Elvis Presley had one of his two BMW 507 Roadsters painted red: it didn’t show the lipstick marks left by adoring fans. That’s the way the story goes at least, but perhaps some of them were simply showing their admiration for a truly spectacular and exotic car that Road & Track described as a “fortuitous combination of all-out racing beastliness and the true grace of postwar Italian design.”

Once again, as with other landmark luxury European sports cars including the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and Roadster, the driving force behind the BMW 507 was legendary New York importer Max Hoffman, who persuaded BMW there was a market—particularly among America’s highest rollers—for an exotic, high-priced, European, open-top sports car. Hoffman recruited New York-based German expatriot industrial designer Count Albrecht von Goertz to pen the dramatic aluminum body.

The chassis was a shortened version of that used on the 502 sedan, which also furnished the fabulous burble of the all-aluminum 3168cc OHV V-8 breathing through a pair of Zenith twin-choke carburetors. With the V-8 rated at 150 HP, the 507 was good for 124 MPH. When deliveries started in June 1956, sales didn’t materialize as fast as Hoffman had hoped, in large part because although the exotic BMW was undoubtedly beautiful, its initial price of $8,988 was a deal more exotic than Hoffman’s $5,000 target, at which he forecasted annual sales in the thousands. Nevertheless, the 507 got even more exotic, its price rising to $10,500 in 1959. In its short career, which returned sales of just 252, BMW invested considerable development effort, befitting its status as a prestigous flagship model.

This 1959 BMW 507 Roadster is No. 242 of those 252 produced. As a late-production Series II model, it benefits from the revised cabin that increased space and leg room by moving the fuel tank aft to the trunk floor. Early cars were drum-braked, while front discs later became an option; however, this example features the very rare 4-wheel disc-brake option, developed in conjunction with BMW by none other than British motorcycling world champion and future Formula 1 world champion John Surtees for his own 507. Another extremely rare extra is the hard top, which it’s reckoned was supplied to just 11 BMW 507s. Each of the hard tops was individually fabricated to fit a particular car, as the hand-crafted bodies varied from one car to another. The BMW 507 also features a Blaupunkt radio, three-piece luggage set and a tool kit under the hood.

This BMW 507 Roadster was previously owned by well-known BMW collector Goetz Pfafflin, a long-time BMW Car Club of America member and founder of the BMW Vintage and Classic Car Club of America. Its 3168cc OHV V-8, backed here by a ZF 4-speed manual gearbox, was rebuilt along with the suspension and brakes in 1997 by BMW specialist Brummer of Munich, Germany. A professional restoration by Bruce Kelly’s Lake Country Classic in Minneapolis, Minnesota, followed in 2001, focusing on the bodywork, paint, upholstery, top and chrome. That same year, Pfafflin completed the 3,500-mile BMW Vintage Marathon of Europe, with Brummer repairing the wiring system prior to the rally, and the BMW was displayed at the 2021 Concours d’Elegance of America.

With 202 known survivors of the 252 built, it goes without saying that any BMW 507 is far rarer than the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, which totaled 1,858 sales. This example though is rare even within the small and exclusive circle of BMW 507s.

The car in question, a chassis # 70242

Just got the word that a 1971 Stutz Blackhawk Elvis once owned has just sold in St Louis to a New Jersey collector for $395,000. Whether it is the same car that sold for $297,000 at a Mecum Las Vegas auction on 11 November 2022, or not, this sale establishes a new record for the most ever paid for a Stutz Blackhawk

Another BMW 507 with a reference to Elvis and a few others having driven them
splashed, for good measure, in the auctioneer's description page, (see below) is going for sale on March 1, 2024 in Florida.

Its original, first owner was New Orleans' jazz crarinetist Pete Fountain (born Pierre Dewey LaFontaine Jr).

It is expected to fetch between US$2.6 and 2.9 million. A real beauty with both its hard and soft top, built in late 1958 but as noted in the descrition as well, from the class of 1959.

This is a big stretch. It only states that Elvis drove the same model car ...

I am no longer surprised at how Elvis is portrayed when an auction of something that belonged to him, or used, or borrowed, or whatever, is forthcoming. Here they could have hardly picked a less flattering photo of Elvis' hanging on to his 1974/1975 Martin D-28, one which has already been sold at auction for over #106,000,

Here's the photo they could have used, action packed!!

Apparently, one of Elvis' most famous funny depictions is getting a sort of additioonal streaming audience, at Apple TV, a funny as hell encounter between him and Steve Martin in early 1971 in Las Vegas,

Incidentally, Martn's documentary documerntary is #8 in the US and #18 worldwide in Apple 's charts

This is the kind of thing that happens as religiously and as frequently to the spirit of Elvis in spite of the fact he sang there once. LOL: The only time I was there was at 4am, with 5 below zero. I could hardly get out of the car so that my wife could take a photo of me, but I did.

Tremendous showcases for July!! As to the Beatles night, I remember vividly in 1965, in Sao Paulo, when my dad took me to see the American Beetles appear at the TV7 Record Theater which in late 1966 burnt to the ground along with the tapes showing at least 400 goals by Pele (1956-66), 200 of which I had seen him score, in person,(1964-66), Thankfully, the Globo and Tupi networks had half of them, but there were some I saw him do, which neither network had, other than Record, so that goal is gone,
