This just out

Reference

Andy Warhol, Elvis 2 Times, 1963. Estimate: $20M-$30M.

"Perhaps the most famous depiction of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll by the Prince of Pop Art, Warhol’s 1963 Elvis 2 Times represents a watershed moment in twentieth-century Art History," they say (Sotheby's, which is selling it, it is understood)

"The painting combines an investigation of the uniquely American fascination with celebrity and mass media that emerged in the 1960s with unsettling visual evocation of both violence and desire. For the compulsive movie-fan Warhol, Elvis as the reluctant gunslinger presented the zenith of subject matter: ultimate celebrity invested with ultimate power."

Interesting review of Louis Menand ' s latest book ‘The Free World’......... but?

" Much of the book is very concrete but it all ends up feeling rather amorphous. We wind up knowing quite a bit about Andy Warhol or about Elvis Presley’s early career but are left unsure about the relevance of the Cold War to either".

The upside as far as Elvis exposure is concerned is that the winning bids in ninety percent of these auction sales came from Museums. I dont know about the other artists, but at least seventeen of Warhols's Elvis silkscreens which were in private hands, where only few people could see them, are now in as many major Museums of Modern Art., drawing at least a couple of dozen million visitors anually. including

In the US

Leo Caselli Gallery, NY
MOMANY,
NY Whitney Modern Art
NY MET
MOMA SF;
Broad in LA,
Seattle MOMA,
Virginia Museum in Richmond, VA
Warhol's Museum in Pittsburg, PA

And elsewhere

Ontario Gallery of Art, Ont. CA.
Berlin MOMA, Germany
Guggemheim in Bilbao, Spain
Hamburg Gallery Germany
Italian Gallery Milan, Italy
Daros Collection Switzerland,
National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

The eyelet jumpsuit has just sold for 510.000 USD plus commission to a crowd bidder.
The eyelet cape sold for 300.000 USD plus commission to a crowd bidder (could be the same as the one who bought the jumpsuit).

The crowd bidder was none other than Heather Mozart, whose home(s) are so large they can hardly be clearly photographed from the air. LOL. She will pay US$1.016,000 for the two but without the belt. Something like this..

Somehow I'm not surprised.

One of the belts is in the Hard rock in Memphis near the ceiling. And the red vulture belt that Elvis wore with the suit in Vegas 1972 is with another private collector who will not sell.

If the Mozarts want something at an auction, she will probably get it.

I would really wish I could visit their museum. They really have a nice collection of jumpsuits now. 2nd largest in the world.

Last night in New York, two of Warhol's silkscreens went on sale at Christie's, for US$40 and US$18.1 million, those highlighting the faces of Basquiat and Ali respectively. No Elvis by Warhol related records were broken, as per the list below

i) "Eight Elvises"/$ 111,200,000/Private sale, includes US$11.2 m in fees /2008, seller was italian collector Annibale Berlingier, buyer the Qatar ruling family, The páinting is now at the QMOMA

The story about the Martin guitar sounds strange. Should Elvis has given this to Norman Taroug in 1977?

It says that Elvis gave the guitar to Taurog in his Beverly Hills home. But Elvis had no Beverly Hills home in 1977 and apparently he used the guitar in 1977 so it could not have been given away earlier...
