Love and Friendship is one of the best films of the year so far, in my opinion. I saw the Elvis & Nixon trailer before it, too. I`ve also seen the Elvis & Nixon trailer before Money Monster, Our Kind of Traitor, Everybody Wants Some!!, A Hologram for the King and Florence Foster Jenkins. I`ve also seen the poster in a couple of foyers -- it first appeared over a month ago.

Also, A Little Less Conversation is used in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Hope you enjoyed Love & Friendship, George.
We saw love and friendship last night, thoroughly enjoyed it and thought Kate Beckinsale was superb

Most civilised and beautifully played, indeed.

The classic rock station Absolute Radio in London is plugging Elvis & Nixon this week (the morning deejay is a big Presley fan), and there are posters on London Underground too. I'm hoping to view this coming weekend.

As published on my Facebook page today:

This week sees the UK release of the "based on a true story" comedy film "Elvis & Nixon", starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey, and the latest video and blog entry for my forthcoming Presley book looks briefly at this remarkable event.

In December 1970, at the very peak of his great career comeback, Elvis Presley disappeared from his Memphis home without warning, boarded a commercial flight, and travelled to Washington DC to meet with President Richard Nixon.

Presley's mission was simple, but also seemingly impossible: to persuade the President to issue him with a Bureau of Narcotics Badge -- the Holy Grail of police ephemera (Presley was a noted collector of police badges and supporter of law enforcement).

Nixon, who had no idea that Elvis was coming, agreed to meet with the entertainer and both men recognised their common "rags-to-riches" journey.

Elvis brought two friends with him to the Oval Office and several official photographs captured the meeting for posterity. The King and the President maintained a cordial friendship until Presley's death in 1977.

The song that accompanies this short video, "Where Did They Go, Lord?", is an enigmatic composition that Elvis commissioned and recorded in autumn of 1970. It's a song of lost love, but there is a sense in which it goes much deeper and questions America's loss of faith in itself at that turbulent national time.

So ... did Elvis get his badge from the President?

..

ELVIS IS IN THE BUILDING

Elvis & Nixon: A review by George Smith

What I like best of all is a good story. And there are few better stories than the one about Elvis meeting Nixon in December 1970.

The trick is, how to tell that story without being disrespectful to the main characters even when their actions border on the absurd. All credit then to director Liza Johnson for putting together a film that is witty, touching and even relatively accurate for the most part.

The day when The King met The President has gone down in pop culture as one of the great mis-matches, but here the meeting is pictured as a coming together of two hugely influential men who believed sincerely in the American Dream.

Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey both give superbly observed performances (physically and vocally) and are ably supported by Alex Pettyfer as Jerry Schilling, and a cast of excellent bit-part players who, with the exception of Sonny West's character, all ring beautifully true.

Shannon's Elvis does occasionally border on near-parody but, as the film progresses, this viewer was drawn in by the intelligence of his portrayal, and his monologues on the price of fame and his humble origins were well-written and perfectly delivered.

As a Presley fan, I'd hoped that the Vietnam Vet episode on the plane might have featured in the screenplay (it didn't) because it would have captured the man's inherent generosity in one stroke. There's also no getting around the simple fact that few actors (including Shannon) share Presley's god-like looks and physical grace which is key to understanding the singer's charisma and persuasive charm, and that was a downside to the viewing experience.

I watched the film in a major London cinema which was one-third full on a Saturday afternoon. I was accompanied by my 20 and 18 years-old sons who both loved it (one is a serious Elvis fan, the other a Politics student) and the audience were receptive and laughed along at the many comedic highspots.

In a nutshell, it's a little gem, and its release signifies the impact that Presley continues to have in modern culture.

Go with an open mind: laugh at the absurdities and remember just how much Executive Producer Jerry Schilling loved his friend, Elvis Presley.

Greystoke wrote:Elvis & Nixon opened with £56,775 in UK cinemas this weekend. Which is lower than I expected, although it only played in 107 sites when it was originally touted for a wider release. Although there's numerous tentpole movies dominating the box office just now, which means that they also play on more screens than smaller movies.

Had Elvis & Nixon earned the same amount on a limited release, playing predominantly in art houses, £56,775 would have been more than decent. But this is quite low for a movie playing on over 100 screens.
It's only at the arthouse cinema in Norwich, sadly, so I guess it depends which screens those 100 are. And briefly looking at Cineworld as an example, it might be on at the multiplex, but it's only on in 3 of their 43 cinemas, and then only once a day in the afternoon, even in London.

I really enjoyed this film, it had some comedy value, it was done tastefully.. I was disopointed in Micheal Shannon for his looks as elvis, he played the part well..
