You can't use the ISRC numbers to judge whether a track is newly rematered or not. We use the same ISRC numbers as before, even when something is remastered - and all masters are!!!
This really doesn't make any sense as written. If you read it as literally put down word for word, it's not a true statement. We have many examples of ISRC numbers changing, so they do NOT "use the same ISRC numbers as before, even when something is remastered."

I trust Ernst is not lying to us, so there's some meaning here that cannot be gleaned by mere mortals.

Ernst, if you want to enlighten us, you need to give us a little more to go on. If you want to confuse the issue, then mission accomplished.

Some observations so far:

The following soundtracks had ISRCs assigned in 1999 (with a few exceptions for a few tracks):

Girls! Girls! Girls!
Fun In Acapulco
Girl Happy
Viva Las Vegas
Roustabout
Harum Scarum
(It Happened at the) World's Fair

The first 5 above are due for re-release on January 26, 2010 on Sony's budget line.

The following soundtracks had ISRCs assigned in 2007 or later:

G.I. Blues
Clambake
Frankie And Johnny
Easy Come, Easy Go
Spinout
Double Trouble
Blue Hawaii
Paradise, Hawaiian Style

Except for "G. I Blues," "Clambake" and "Frankie And Johnny," none of these are scheduled for re-release in January, 2010.

"Kid Galahad" had 3 tracks assigned new ISRCs assigned in 2007 or thereafter, and 3 tracks had ISRCs assigned earlier.

All the rest of the tracks on the Franklin Mint set (where I have extracted ISRCs) had the ISRCs assigned in 2007 and thereafter, with a very few exceptions.

It will be interesting whether new ISRCs are assigned to the re-releases due on January 26, 2010.

In defense of Ernst, "re-master" can mean different things. One, technically whenever a track is reissued, it is remastered. Or, two, a track is remastered when it is re-mixed, de-noised, de-clicked, etc. In the later case a new ISRC is assigned.

I think Ernst was referring to re-mastered in the first sense. Some tracks don't need remastering because they are good enough as originally issued (or as re-mastered in the past). On the Franklin Mint set, the tracks that have "old" ISRCs do sound very good.

Ernst is mistaken about the retention of the ISRC code after remastering (in the second sense) because, as pointed out, this is simply not the case. Elvis' recordings seem to get new ISRCs every few years.

As to our detective work, uncovering ISRCs, etc. I seem to remember that Ernst was one of the first to deleve into the RCA numbering system in order to determine recording dates, etc. He published one of the first books on the subject, as I recall. He should be proud that we are carrying on his heritage.

Not really.... remastering is taking an existing master and making it different in some way than what has come before (different EQ, adding reverb, compression, etc.). Remixing is going back to the original multi-session reels and creating a new mix.

If nothing is done to a song from its previous issue, it is a re-release of an existing mastering (as opposed to a remastering).

Dear all

I know that sometimes (almost always) answers create new questions. It's indeed correct that some tracks have new ISRC numbers, but some don't. The systematic application of a new ISRC number is no longer in effect, so wheras I'm sure you can deduct facts from some numbers, it's not conclusive evidence.

Here's what happened. In March of 2007 SONY decided to go through all Elvis masters (we can always argue about what is a master and what's not). We retransferred everything (again, "everything" can be argued as in some cases there is no original record master), remastered all tracks including repairing as many clicks, pops, bad edits and dropouts as we could. Vic Anesini spent literally hundreds of hours on the project, as did Sebastian Jeansson, who worked as our audio consultant on the project, tirelessly pushing Vic and I to try new ways of improving the sound. We have used these newly mastered recordings on our new releases including the gospel box, several digital download albums, budget releases, and yes, the Franklin Mint package. There is nothing unusual about this, maybe except for the commitment of a record company to finance such a vast project.
Ever since I started (and certainly before that as well), we have tried to improve the sound of Elvis' recordings. Since we believe these new masters are better than what we had before, you can argue that we didn't a good job in the past, but you can only do the best you can at the time you do it. Technology improves, and with Vic Anesini joining our team, tremendous knowhow has been added to the process. Vic now has become familiar with all the oddities and challenges of the Elvis tapes. Sebastian Jeansson has been a tremendous support and supplied lots of technical information as well as lending us a great set of ears. Even I may have learned something along the way.
Does this mean that these "new masters" are the end-all masters. Definitely no! The nature of our work is to always try and do better - that should never stop.
New technology may one day be available, new tapes may turn up, and solutions to still existing problems may appear.
I have seen messages that want to discard the work done before, and consequently the contribution of the people who created the previous releases. It seems very unfair to me. Whatever we released before (you will be able to point to exceptions) was the best we knew how to do at the time. Every engineer and producer who went before has taught as something important that is now part of the knowhow we have.

The Franklin Mint set is a release like every other release, a package designed to the needs of the Frankliln Mint company, and should not be confused with any other bigger package. At this time there is no information about any other box coming out, or not coming out, and it would not be up to me to release such information, anyway, Please don't start overinterpreting this, SONY will as always publish information about upcoming releases in a timely manner, and release plans are under constant revision.

Last. Unfortunately I rarely have time (some think I should spent my time finishing a certain book) to be on this Forum, but Christmas gave me a few days off, so I'd like to thank all of you for having me on the board.

Happy New Year

Ernst

Finally we get the goods. Thank you very much.

If I may make the suggestion that when newly improved masters are released that a notation is made with the date.

This may stop the habit that some people have on insisting that every release is better than the last one.
when in fact nothing has changed.

PS Looking forward to King Creole FTD :)

Thanks, Ernst, for your post.

As a collector, I'm mostly interested in good and better sound, and I can attest that the sound quality of Elvis' recordings over the last couple years has taken a big leap forward. If it were not for you and your team's efforts in this regard I believe that it wouldn't have happened. As I've extracted the ISRCs on the Franklin Mint set (and other recent releases) I've noted the "old" ISRCs on various tracks and albums, but at the same time commented that those songs and albums sound great. After all, it is the sound that matters, not a bunch of numbers. You and your team have done a fantastic job!

MT

P.S. As to your book, my thought is take as much time as you need. If you have or get new leads and have the resources to follow them I'd rather you do so than to publish the book prematurely. I know you feel the same way.

As a an almost 50 year fan of Elvis music I would like to state that the sound quality on recent FTD's and regular releases has sky rocketed. Three examples of FTD; Blue Hawaii, Girls Girls Girls and Wild In The Country. Three examples of regular releases: From Elvis In Memphis, The Complete 68 Comeback Special and the budget CD I Got Lucky. I have never heard this music sounding so good. I did not even know that this music could sound this outstanding. They are incredible. I can only imagine how wonderful the new Franklin set sounds.

Many on this board have complained about sound upgrades. I will never join that group. Ernst and his team are working for people like me and they have my forever support.

Couldn't have put it any better – the remastered CDs sound stunning!!

You enjoy the music more by hearing instruments you've never heard before – it's the audio equivalent of Blu-ray.

Happy New Year Ernst, and thanks for participating in this thread. You've been contributing to, and for a large part defining, our Elvis music experience for 20+ years now, and that is great.

Looking forward to FTD projects 2010 and of course your Sun project, which has been a long time coming (but I'm sure worth the wait) and should be the definitive word on that phase in Elvis' career.

I know it's not up to you to say, but I hope Sony will release a superior Elvis masters box set in 2010 containing not only all the masters, but elaborate packaging with appropriate annotation/insightful liner notes/tracks in right chronological order etc. I would buy it, even at superior cost to the Franklin Mint set.

I also look forward to any December 1975 and/or March 1976 soundboard recorded show you might have available for FTD. I'm thinking of soundboard or reel-to-reel recorded shows like Johnson City 17-3-76 or Vegas 13-12-75 midnight show :) Or any 1973 "soundbooth" recordings you might have. I think fans would prefer 2-cd sets over single cd's regarding certain engagements/tours (if it means more Elvis), if available, to paint a more complete picture of that time. For example, your "Nevada Nights" release was an absolute winner, as well as "Dixieland Delight" ! But I will continue to buy them all, as I've stated countless times before on this board. If we want this to continue, we should happily give the support, in other words keep buying them.

I wouldn't say no either to additional "On Tour" '72 material, particularly a show like the Richmond Coliseum April 10, 1972 show ! And I do think most fans would like to see some of the other multitracks released as well, including Vegas '69, TTWII '70, Aloha dress rehearsal '73, Rapid City '77.

But that is hardly a surprise, I guess.

But really, any good sounding show would be welcome news, for us hardcore collectors. And of course the remaining classic albums and movie soundtracks, And...

FTD & ::rocks

Joe Krein interview with Sherril Nielsen: "YOU KNOW YOU FORGET HOW GOOD HE REALLY WAS. I SAID MY GOODNESS. YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE WITH HIM YOU ARE SO WRAPPED UP DOING THE SHOW, BUT HERE NOW 20 YEARS LATER, I HEAR HIM AND REALIZE WHAT A GREAT TALENT HE WAS. HE WAS THE REAL DEAL.

Hi Ernst,

This question is a bit off topic from Franklin Mint, but as you are reading this thread, I'm hoping you will see this and can provide some insight.

The version of "Oh Happy Day" BMG published on the TTWII SE 3CD set in 2000 appears to be from inferior multigenerational sources, perhaps derived from a copy of a Nagra tape. The band is oddly absent from the mix and hiss levels are massive.

I was wondering three things:

a) In the 10 years since TTWII 3CD set, has a better sounding copy of "Oh Happy Day" surfaced?
b) Are there any multitrack (16 track or twin track Nagra) recordings extant of "Oh Happy Day"? Either the Aug 7 or 10 rehearsals?
c) Why does the sound of "Oh Happy Day" sound so bad on the TTWII SE CD, especially when videos of the track on YouTube sound much better?

Thanks!
