Introducing Phil Gelormine

Phil Gelormine from New Jersey will be a new collaborator on For Elvis CD Collectors Only website and have an editorial column titled " My Elvis World ". Here's below a brief presentation of this newcomer on FECC. PHIL GELORMINE is a freelance photojournalist who, upon graduating from college in 1972, joined the editorial staff of Billboard Magazine in New York City.

At that time he reviewed Elvis' records, concert performances and "Aloha" TV special. He was directly responsible for presenting Elvis with Billboard's 1973 Trendsetter Award for "Aloha" which Elvis accepted in Las Vegas in January of 1974. Following his stint with Billboard, Phil edited United Feature Syndicate's Pop Scene which ran in more than 100 newspapers both here and abroad. Later, his photographs of Elvis appeared in dozens of movie magazines, in an RCA record album, the Entertainment Tonight television show and recently Rolling Stone magazine.

Upon Elvis' death, he founded ELVIS WORLD, a fan friendly magazine which he continues to helm to this day. A lifelong fan, Phil and his collaborator Dave Wolven, were invited to Elvis' "midnight movies" at the Memphian in the summer of 1971 and back again, at the Crosstown in December of the same year. A foremost authority of Presleyana, as well as having attended and photographed 32 Elvis concerts, he is honored to be in such illustrious company as those selected to write "For Elvis CD Collectors Only."

Elvis still king of UK pop charts after 4 weeks

Almost 25 years after his death, the King still rules, racking up a fourth consecutive week at No. 1 on the U.K. pop charts. Dutch DJ JXL's dance remix of Elvis Presley's obscure 1968 "A Little Less Conversation" held firm to the top spot, buoyed by its use in a television ad campaign aired repeatedly during the soccer World Cup.

The remix has been the longest running U.K. chart-topper since February when Latin crooner Enrique Iglesias reigned for four weeks with his single "Hero." In the U.S., "A Little Less Conversation" debuted at No. 1 on the latest singles sales charts, but at No. 50 on the overall Hot 100 charts, which are derived from both sales and radio airplay.

Behind the Image

Review by Jim Donohue

At a time when Elvis Presley seems to be more prevalent than ever, with countless documentaries, boxed sets, and even a Number One single in the U.K., you would think we'd all be "Elvised Out". Then along comes "Behind The Image", a documentary on DVD that dares to show us a side of Elvis that even the most die-hard fans will find refreshing. Through interviews with three key players in Elvis' life, backup singer Kathy Westmoreland, rhythm guitarist John Wilkinson, and close friend and personal photographer Sandi Miller, this film touches on the Elvis that THEY knew, not to be confused with the performer WE saw in films or heard on records. Their Elvis was a man whose greatest wish was for "piece in my heart", as he told Miller. He was a man who wasn't so big that he couldn't take criticism from a 9 year old Wilkinson, who told the not-yet King, "You can't play guitar worth a damn!" Presley, to his credit, made sure he kept his eye on that little boy, until he was old enough to join his traveling band. And Westmoreland, who very rarely speaks publicly about her former boss, acknowledges that he was "her first intimate relationship with a man". The film is filled with little tidbits like that, things that would have hard-core fans saying, "Wow! I never knew that!". Killer stuff.

The other huge thing that this film has over the others is the incredibly rare live footage of Elvis, on stage, and candid. We see Elvis like we've never seen him before, signing autographs in front of his house, and gliding across the stage in the famous "Fringe Jumpsuit", which he wore in 1970 at the Forum in L.A., and never again after that. There's footage in here that rivals that of Elvis' two released concert films, On Tour and That's The Way It Is, in its richness and clarity. The footage, silent of course, having been shot from the audience with good old movie cameras (remember those?), is the property of one of the producers of the documentary, Bud Glass. Glass' willingness to share these films with the Elvis world is itself quite rare and very admirable indeed.

The entire production, interviews and live footage, is backed by wonderful instrumentation that would make Wilkinson and his partner James Burton proud. Mark Rothman and Eli Moscovitz, two New York musicians, have written and performed a terrific soundtrack for this film by capturing the feel of Presley's music, from the 50's rockabilly sound, through to the bluesy guitar work that accompanied Elvis' later recordings. All the music is original, although it's so good you'd swear you're already familiar with it. The only song the duo didn't write is the title song, Behind The Image, a beautiful ballad written by Glass, and sung over the end credits.Which brings me to a few things I could have done without.

I saw no reason for the Elvis Museum Tour to follow the end credits, while the title song continued. The song deserved to be played over a nice montage of photos of the King himself. The whole "Behind the Image" idea became lost because what we're now looking at, at the Elvis-A-Rama Museum, was no longer BEHIND the image, but the very IMAGE itself. We've all seen the jumpsuits and the jewelry before. This film worked so hard at showing us what the real Elvis was like, and successfully I might add, that the photos would've been a fitting conclusion, as the song played to its end. One other suggestion to the producers, for the promised Volume 2, would be to stagger the interviews, so that we're not listening to twenty minutes of any one speaker. It's more "viewer-friendly" that way. Just a suggestion.

The truth is, though, that Behind The Image, even with these few minor distractions, is a wonderful, thrill-filled documentary for the Elvis lover in all of us. With the promise of more of Glass' footage available, all I can say is "Bring on Volume 2!".

CNN Europe Headline - Presley makes UK chart history

LONDON, England
Elvis Presley has made pop history 25 years after his death as a new single clinches the UK No1 spot giving him more hits than any artist. A remix of his 1968 song 'A Little Less Conversation,' which features in a Nike ad for the World Cup, topped the UK charts on Sunday, ahead of new songs from the likes of Kylie Minogue and Eminem.

Presley, who died on August 16 1977, has now had more number ones than any artist in the pop chart's 50-year history. It is his 18th UK number one and breaks the record he held with The Beatles, who have had 17.

Dutch remix of forgotten Elvis Presley song expected to score a hit 25 years after his death

Elvis Presley is expected to score a posthumous hit with a Dutch remix of the forgotten song "A Little Less Conversation," a quarter century after his death. Dutch musician Tom Holkenburg, known in Europe as the deejay of the techno-group Junkie XL, remixed the 1968 Elvis song for a Nike television commercial for the World Cup soccer tournament underway in Japan and Korea. Although a contemporary remix, it leaves the distinctive vocals of the rock'n roll legend intact.

Available under the title "Elvis vs. JXL - A Little Less Conversation," it is the first remix of an Elvis song. The single, which was released throughout Europe on June 10, was likely to enter the charts at number one in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It sold more than 67,000 copies in Britain the first day, more than the total sales of last week's number one on the British charts, "Light My Fire" by Will Young. "It's quite amazing. We have been outselling the nearest competition almost three to one so far," said Adam Bradley, the marketing manager for record company BMG, reached Thursday by telephone in London.

The single will be released in the United States on June 25. "Our people in America are confident they will also have a number one with this," Bradley said. Figures for sales in the Netherlands or elsewhere in Europe were unavailable. A top selling hit would return Elvis to the Guinness Book of Records as the artist with the most number-one recordings in England, breaking the long-running tie with The Beatles with 17 apiece. "We can be making history here," Bradley said. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. "A Little Less Conversation" was written by Mac Davis and Billy Strange for the 1968 movie "Live a Little, Love a Little." In the United States, the song was used as the B-side for the single "Almost In Love."

The original song was also on the soundtrack of the 2001 movie "Ocean's Eleven" by Steven Soderbergh. The remix was approved for the Nike ad by the Elvis estate, although Junkie XL was asked to change its name to JXL to avoid a reference to drugs. "They were delighted with the song," said Bradley. Elvis' voice remains unchanged on the track, but the rhythm is faster and the track begins with a one-minute upbeat instrumental. Its success didn't come as a surprise to Bradley. "It's Elvis Presley. It's made contemporary. It captures the new generation of music fans," he said.

The great performances

Today I received the DVD "Elvis - The great performances", a DVD I was waiting for quite some time. Finally we will have a lot of great footage on DVD, but unfortunately, my excitement was gone immediately while watching the first part. The DVD is just a straight copy from the videotape, with no remastering, and even worse, the sound was not always synchronal with the picture. This is a bad release from Icestorm, and we can only hope that there won't be any mistakes on the other two releases. The chances that I will play this DVD again is almost zero.

Otis Blackwell

Otis Blackwell, who wrote dozens of hit songs, including "Don't Be Cruel" for Elvis Presley, died Monday of a heart attack. He was 70. Blackwell wrote more than 1,000 songs that were recorded by performers such as Ray Charles, Billy Joel, The Who, James Taylor, Otis Redding, Peggy Lee and Jerry Lee Lewis. Some of Blackwell's other credits include "Great Balls of Fire" and "Breathless," both recorded by Lewis; "Handy Man" by Taylor; "Fever" by Lee; "Daddy Rolling Stone" by The Who; and "Return to Sender" and "All Shook Up," each recorded by Presley.

Blackwell was credited with writing songs that sold more than 185 million copies. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Blackwell grew up wanting to be a singer. While recording songs for a small company in New York City, he was asked to write songs as well. Blackwell often sang the songs himself before they were recorded, and some music historians believe his style influenced Presley's.

Caught in a trap

I just received my copy of the new book "Caught In A Trap" produced by the duo Arjan Deelen/ Laurens van Houten and distributed by "It's Elvis Time". Anne E. Nixon also contributed to this book. Right from the beginning you know that you have in your hands a quality product. The quality of printing, paper and the overall layout of the book is simply AWESOME.

Arjan Deelen apparently done some research and came up with an informative text on this period in Elvis' career (August/September '73 Vegas Season), with the inclusion of some memorabilia related to this. The text also include how Laurens van Houten got to photograph Elvis at the Hilton and the 25 Dutch Elvis fans who were part of this trip as well. It is a very interesting read all the way through.

Mr. van Houten took pictures at three different shows, dinner shows of August 31st and September 1st, 1973 and the famed closing show of September 3rd, 1973. The photographs in the book are spread into chronological order and the songs performed at these three performances are also given. It has to be said here that most of the pictures are quite rare, especially the ones with Elvis wearing the "Black Spanish Flowers" jumpsuit with green stones and the "Light Blue Flower" stage attire.

All the pictures with the "Black Spanish Flowers" are in color while the section containing the photographs with the "Light Blue Flower" being a mixture of color and black & white shots. To me those were fascinating as I haven't seen so many photographs with these jumpsuits all at once. The main core of the book are pictures from the closing show and those are simply GREAT. We all know this show was at the very least pretty special, and Laurens van Houten perfectly captured these moments through his lens. Here again we have a mix of color and black & white but both are great. There are a few blurry pictures, but really only an handful and in no way distracting from the overall quality of this book.

Mr. Deelen is without any doubts a very talented individual and wished he will be producing other gems like this. There are many books produced on Elvis every year but only a few reach this quality. For Elvis CD Collectors Only website highly recommend this book to all the fans out there.

That's all right mama

There will be a great Elvis meeting on Mothers day, May 12th in Amsterdam. The happening will take place at "Cafe Maloe Melo", lijnbaansgracht, Amsterdam. This will be a huge Elvis party with approx 30 musicians, such as the famous Dutch singer Jan Rot (who recently had a baby girl and named her Elvis). The event will start at 8 PM, and will end at 1 AM. Good news for the visitors that this happening is for "FREE". So, you will have 5 hours of Elvis' music, from rock-a-billy to Vegas that is still incredible popular after all these years. See you all in Maloe Melo!!

Chrysalis gets hunka Elvis publishing catalogs

NEW YORK (Variety) - Independent music publisher Chrysalis Music has signed prestigious five-year worldwide contract to administer a pair of publishing catalogs representing the bulk of Elvis Presley's biggest hits. The deal, cut last week with catalog co-owner Julian J. Aberbach and Elvis Presley Enterprises, gives Chrysalis direct control over Gladys Music and Elvis Presley Music for North America and authorizes the company to supervise the catalog's existing subpublishing deals abroad. Together the two catalogs hold nearly 500 compositions, including such rock 'n' roll classics as "Hound Dog," "All Shook Up," "Love Me Tender" and "Viva Las Vegas." The singer's top hits can command as much as $250,000 in publishing royalties for a single use -- a rate rivaled only by the Beatles' best-known work. Chrysalis beat out larger rival BMG Music Publishing, whose parent company BMG Entertainment owns most of Presley's recorded music catalog through its RCA imprint. BMG is planning a major marketing push later this year to accompany a new collection of Presley's 30 No. 1 hits this October. Prior to last week's deal, the two Presley catalogs were independently administered. Los Angeles-based Chrysalis' eclectic roster of songwriters includes platinum-selling rap duo OutKast, Italian singer Andrea Bocelli (news - web sites), singer-songwriter David Gray and ex-Van Halen front man David Lee Roth. It also administers compositions from Blondie, Pat Benatar and Jethro Tull, among others.

Intimate with Elvis

This release contains more than 20 minutes of hot, rare Elvis footage - and when we say 'hot', we mean HOT! The nature of this footage certainly lives up to the title of this CD Rom: you will not believe your eyes! The quality of this footage is outstanding, with some great close-ups of our Man. But there's more. "Intimate with Elvis" also contains more than 300 unpublished photos (mostly color), focusing on the movie years, from "Love Me Tender" (1956) to "Elvis On Tour" (1972). But there's even more! Our CD Rom also contains 25 minutes of rare Elvis recordings from the 1970's. Granted, these have been released before (but are hard to get now) but never in this quality! These recordings give a unique insight into Elvis, both as a musician and as a human being.

"Intimate with Elvis" is our most ambitious release so far, and we have done everything to make this a first class product. The CD Rom is packaged up to our usual standards, with a beautiful cover with rare photos, as well as in-dept liner notes. Get intimate with The King, and order this great new release today!!
