Elvis Rolls the Stones

The King's greatest hits were just a little bit greater than the Stones'.

In the most-anticipated battle of dinosaurs since Jurassic Park, Elvis Presley's new best-of collection, Elvis 30 #1 Hits, bested the Rolling Stones' umpteenth anthology, Forty Licks, for the top spot on the album charts. Elvis debuted at number one last week with more than 500,000 copies sold, but many expected the Stones to, um, roll over Elvis this week.

But Elvis refused to leave the building.

For the week ended Sunday, Elvis 30 #1 Hits held number one, selling 337,000 copies, according to SoundScan. As a double-disc set, Forty Licks' higher retail tag may have stunted its chances of toppling the King. Still, the Stones' latest greatest-hits package opened at number two with a 310,000-copy first week.

Elvis, Stones Top Billboard Albums Chart: What Year Is This?

When Neil Young sang "The King is gone but he's not forgotten," and the Rolling Stones covered Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away," it's doubtful either believed the lines would hold true more than 20 years later. But that's just the case on next week's Billboard albums chart.

Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones will reside in the #1 and #2 positions, respectively, according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday (October 9). Elvis 30 #1 Hits sold more than 336,000 copies last week to bring the double album's two-week sales to more than 837,000 copies. The Rolling Stones, knee deep into their Licks World Tour and the subject of a multimedia blitz punctuated by a shirtless and shrivel-skinned Keith Richards gracing the cover of Rolling Stone, saw their umpteenth greatest-hits collection, Forty Licks, a double album featuring four new songs, move more than 309,000 copies in its first week out.

NBC Celebrates 'Elvis'

Presley's most recent album debuted at No. 1 in 18 territories around the world, just after the 25th anniversary of his death. NBC and RCA are celebrating his lasting popularity with "Elvis Lives," a collection of stories, observations and opinions about Presley’s importance.

The hour-long special will honor his enduring legacy with commentary and performances by today’s top musical acts, including Bono, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, Dave Matthews and Britney Spears. Other celebrities expected to make an appearance on the program are Dennis Hopper ("24"), Denis Leary ("The Job") and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

"NBC hit gold with Presley’s 1968 ‘Comeback Special’ and our recent broadcast of ‘Loving You’ on the anniversary of his passing," says Jeff Gaspin, EVP of Alternative Series, Longform and Program Strategy for NBC. "We look forward to celebrating his legacy with a new generation of fans who are now discovering his music." "We are thrilled to join forces with NBC to make Elvis’ incredible legacy come alive for TV viewers and for the music fans who have made ‘Elvis 30 No. 1 Hits’ a No. 1 album," says Bob Jamieson, chairman of RCA Music Group. "The caliber of the artists and celebrities who have signed on to this project speaks volumes about Elvis’ tremendous influence."

"Elvis Lives" is expected to air in late November or December on NBC.

Dead Elvis: King of the World

Elvis Presley is making like a latter-day Julius Caesar. The King of Rock effectively rules over half the planet today, with his latest album commanding the charts of 17 different countries.
Not bad for a guy 25 years dead.

Released in conjunction with the quarter-century anniversary of his demise, Presley's Elvis 30 #1 Hits (a collection of, yes, all his chart-topping singles) currently sits on top of the album listings in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Brazil, Chile, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

In the U.S., the album sold more than 500,000 copies for the week ended Sunday, according to SoundScan numbers. Believe it or not, Elvis 30 #1 Hits became the first Elvis album to open at number one (Elvis was a force when 45s, not LPs, drove the music biz)--another first for the only person ever to be inducted into three musical halls of fame (rock, gospel, country) and the man who has scored more Top 10 pop singles (40) and gold and platinum awards (a combined 139) than any other artist.

"RCA is thrilled and truly proud to be giving renewed life to the musical legacy of one of the greatest musical artists of all time," chirps Bob Jamieson, chairman of RCA Music Group. "The debut of Elvis 30 #1 Hits at the top of the charts speaks as much to Elvis' future as it does his past."

Inspired by the chart-smashing success of the Beatles' 1, the new Elvis disc collects his usual-suspects greatest hits--"Heartbreak Hotel," "Jailhouse Rock," "Love Me Tender," "Hound Dog," "Suspicious Minds," etc.--along with a 31st bonus track, the recently retooled "A Little Less Conversation." The tune, remixed by Junkie XL for a Nike World Cup commercial, became an unlikely hit over the summer, hitting number one in several countries, including the U.S., and became a last-minute addition to the compilation.

ELVIS LIVES! HE'S THE KING OF THE CHARTS ALL OVER AGAIN

And the hits just keep on comin' for Elvis Presley, whose new record debuts tomorrow at No. 1 on the charts - even though he's been dead for 25 years. "Elv1s: 30 No. 1 Hits," released one week ago, has sold nearly 500,000 copies in the United States alone, making it the hottest CD in the nation, according to SoundScan, which tracks sales in record stores. The disc also has the European market all shook up - it's No. 1 in England and Ireland, and is on top of the Canadian charts as well. "We're thrilled. Elvis' legacy transcends time and generations," said Richard Sanders, executive vice president of RCA Records, which released the CD. The King died on Aug. 17, 1977 at the age of 42.
